STEADY GROWTH
Just an update regarding the real estate
market in 2019.
It is estimated that UAE GDP growth will
accelerate from 2.3 per cent in 2018 to 2.9 per
cent in 2019 according to the World Bank
and Oxford Economics. The International
Monetary Fund (IMF) recently quoted even
higher potential growth rates of 3.7 per cent
for 2019. According to Savills, this growth is
stimulated by an increasingly diversified econ-
omy and private sector investment. The report
underlines that the non-oil sector grew by 50
basis points in 2018 to 3%, driven by ongoing
investments attributed to the upcoming Expo
2020 in Dubai and the country’s long term fo-
cus on infrastructure development.
Other than that this edition of Construc-
tion Business News has a special feature: Sup-
pliers You Should Know. An exclusive round
up of the most influential suppliers in the
regional construction industry. These are the
companies that are truly shaping the industry
one step at a time. From raw materials such
as chemicals, to construction products such as
formwork, and finished products, such as fit-
tings, these are the companies without which
there be no industry.
Also we grab an exclusive interview with
the CEO & Managing Director of Sobha
Realty who gives us an insight of what Sob-
ha Realty has achieved and what their plans
are for 2019.
Plus, we give a quick recap of the 21st
edition of Intersec. According to analysts
6WResearch, the Middle East market for
physical and perimeter security, commercial
and information security, fire protection,
and drones, is currently worth a combined
US$14.5 billion. This is estimated to grow
at a compound annual growth rate of 13.5
percent over the next six years, valuing
US$31 billion in 2024.

Upgrading an Urban
Underground Station
Located in the City of London, the Bank-
Monument station is one of the most
complex subterranean railway stations
in the United Kingdom. It is a major
gateway to the area, used by more than
52 million passengers each year, and is
of strategic importance to London and
United Kingdom economies. Transport
for London estimates that well over
100,000 passengers use the station
during peak times, totaling just under
400,000 journeys each weekday.
In 2013, it was decided that the
Bank-Monument station required an

upgrade to better maintain access to
the City of London, the London Under-
ground network, and the Docklands
Light Railway network. This Bank
Station Capacity Upgrade will improve
passenger access, circulation, and
interchange, providing an additional
45 percent capacity during peak hours.
Dragados SA and the London Under-
ground Limited were jointly tasked
with overseeing the planning, design,
and construction of this upgrade.
Collaborating to Meet Core
Requirements
Dragados is one of the largest private-
public partnership contractors in the
world, having performed the design-
build portion of more than 65 con-
cession projects worldwide. To date,
the organization has constructed over
1,380 kilometers of tunnels through all
varieties of geological conditions and
over 1,700 kilometers of rail, high-
speed rail, and mass transit.
Dragados was assigned to work
with London Underground Limited on
this project as part of an innovative
contractor engagement procurement
process, which focused on benefits
and core requirements instead of client

design. London Underground Limited
was incorporated in 1985 and provides
passenger rail services, and refurbish-
ment and maintenance of parts of the
rail network in Greater London. It was
essential that Dragados and London
Underground work together seamlessly
to deliver this massive project.
Overcoming a Complex Design
Challenge
The estimated GBP 6.07 billion project
will provide a new passenger entrance
with lift and escalator connections, a
new train and platform tunnel, and
new tunnels and other internal con-
nections. The project team faced many
challenges, however, significantly with
the existing station’s location. Located
in the heart of the City of London, the
site is surrounded by valuable and
historical buildings and sites, and it
joins with two stations that were built
at different levels.
The existing layout hosts six un-
derground lines in an intricate net
of tunnels, shafts, and galleries. To
address these challenges, the project
team needed to effectively coordinate
among the different disciplines and
organizations, as well as manage the
exchange of information among design
team members. The models needed
to support construction and provide
reliable handover information that is
compliant with London Underground’s
CAD standards.
Bringing Together Teams and
Content
The project team produced 2D and
3D drawings and models to be used
by a variety of disciplines for differ-
ent purposes. During planning, the
site models were used to support the
logistics and consent teams for the
stakeholders’ agreements prior to the
beginning of the project. The models

were also used in design reviews to
validate better engineering options and
support key decisions being made.
To make sure that each discipline
had access to information across all
stages of the project and could eas-
ily collaborate on the designs, the
project team used ProjectWise to bring
together the team and the content.
Bentley’s Connected Data Environment
based on ProjectWise became particu-
larly important for this project because
of the amount of people involved. The
project had 425 individual users from
more than 30 different companies.
During peak design time, there were
120 concurrent users accessing docu-
ments. Dragados and London Under-
ground, as well as outside contractors
and project stakeholders, needed to
collaborate throughout the planning
and design stage, making it necessary
to house all models in one location
and establish a single source of truth
across the project.
// Case study
Saving Time and Cost
ProjectWise housed approximately
1,800 3D models and almost 4,800
drawings produced during the
project’s design phase. By using the
application, team members improved
content management of all these mod-
els and drawings. When compared to
other projects’ electronic document
management systems, the team found
that ProjectWise consumed five times
less staff resources when managing the
same number of files.
By working in this collabora-
tive environment, the project team
recognized a huge potential for
bidding teams to work with London
Underground, which created oppor-
tunities to deliver additional project
value. Dragados streamlined work-
flows and collaboration by using
ProjectWise, which increased the
overall project value by 40 percent.
Using ProjectWise as part of a com-
mon data environment facilitated
the controlled exchange of graphi-
cal data between project partici-
pants, as well as created a traceable
approval process. This improved
collaboration helped the design
team work together and with the
client to approve 95 percent of
packages during the first approval
process, with only three of the 57
packages rejected.
Aligning Connected Data
Environments to Meet Deadlines
Dragados and London Underground
were fully aligned in ProjectWise.
By leveraging ProjectWise and
Bentley’s other applications, the
project has been successful, owing
to enhanced collaboration among
all project participants and the con-
sistent management of design con-
tent across the project. Currently in
the construction phase, the team is
on time to complete the project by
May 2022.

Daimler
The founders of Daimler, Gottlieb
Daimler and Carl Benz, made history
with the invention of the automobile
in the year 1886. Over 130 years later,
Daimler maintains its global reach
with its many class leading divisions,
such as Mercedes Benz Cars, Daimler
Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler
Buses, and Daimler Financial Services.
As such, the Daimler Group remains
one of the biggest producers of
premium cars and the world’s biggest
manufacturer of commercial vehicles
with a global reach. Daimler Com-
mercial Vehicles MENA (DCV MENA)
regional centre was launched in 2015
in Dubai and is one out of six facilities
worldwide responsible for commercial
vehicles related activities of Daimler.
Covering the Middle East as well
as North Africa (17 countries – from
Morocco to Pakistan), the purpose
of the regional centre is to be closer
to Mercedes-Benz trucks, buses and
vans, FUSO vehicles, and Setra buses
customers and to react quickly to
their requirements and changes in
the local markets. The sales, after
sales, and replacement parts activities
for each market are organised via a
network of exclusive general distribu-
tors. The centre manages sales and
customer services and parts activities
for its brands across the region.
2018 saw twin major launches of
the new Actros and the Arcos ranges;
signalling a new chapter in a heavy-
duty truck segment it has dominated
in the region for decades. Both the
Actros and the Arocs are available as
tractor units, drop-side-body chassis,
tipper chassis or concrete mixer chas-
sis. 2019 is likely to see the launch of

Doosan Portable Power
Built to withstand the rigours of every-
day applications in the toughest condi-
tions found in the Middle East market,
the Doosan Portable Power (DPP)
range is one of the most comprehen-
sive in the region. The DPP range
includes portable compressors, genera-
tors and lighting products as well as
construction tools such as air-powered
chipping hammers, pick hammers,
jackhammers and paving breakers.
The Doosan portable compressor
range covers the full span of com-
pressed air applications from construc-
tion, rental, utilities and manufacturing
to quarrying, water well drilling and
the oil and gas industry, with free air
deliveries from 70 to 1600 cfm (2.0 to
Web: www.doosan.com
45 m3/min) at output pressures from
100 to 350 psig (7 to 25 bar).
As well as a wide selection of Tier 3
High Ambient models, the range also
includes several Tier 1 or Tier 2 engine-
powered models well suited to the fuel
quality levels found in the region.
DPP also offers a range of four gen-
erators from 20-60 kVA for the Middle
East, available in both 50 Hz and 60
Hz versions. As well as construction,
rental and agriculture, the new gen-
erators extend the Doosan portfolio
to a wider audience to cover applica-
tions such as home standby, telecom-
munications and back-up power for
small businesses.
The four new generators – the G20,
G30, G45 and G60 – provide prime
power outputs of 20, 30, 45 and 63
kVA, respectively, and all four units are
available as open units (XF) or sound
attenuated versions (XW). The equiva-
lent 60 Hz versions are also available
in a range of voltages between 220V
and 480V (Phase to Phase). Doosan of-
fers a 50 Hz version of the company’s
LSC (LightSource® Compact) portable
light tower for the Middle East market.
Designed for reliability and durabil-
ity, the LSC light tower - also available
as a 60 Hz model - is ideal for rental.
Applications include lighting on road
and bridge construction sites, all gen-
eral construction applications as well
providing lighting for special events,
emergency and disaster relief, oil and
gas drilling and for mining and quarry-
ing locations.
Thanks to a high output alternator,
the power rating of the LSC light tower
has been increased to 6 kW. The addi-
tional power allows operators to fully
utilise the light tower’s four 1,000-watt
metal halide floodlights at the same
time as using the unit’s receptacle
power function. The fuel tank capac-
ity allows an extended runtime to 64
hours (55 hours for the 60 Hz version).
All DPP products are fully supported
by the company’s extensive dealer
network for the Middle East, from unit
start-up to complete servicing, main-
tenance and troubleshooting back-up.
In addition to dealer parts stock for
planned servicing or emergency needs,
parts are also available through the
Doosan network and from within the
Doosan Parts warehouse in Dubai.

Like CASE, the commercial vehicle IVECO brand is part of the
CNHI group. IVECO arguably offers the most complete range
commercial vehicles in the world from off- and on-highway
trucks such as the Stralis and Eurocargo, to its Daily van ranges
and the heavy off-road brand Astra. It has been present in the

JLG
Kansai
2018 marked the tenth anniversary since JLG first established its of-
fice in Jebel Ali Free Zone on the outskirts of Dubai but it has been
present in the market for many decades. JLG is one of the best-
known manufacturers of powered lift and access equipment in the
world. The contribution of its famous orange machines has helped
to develop the adoption and awareness of access work platforms
in the region in roles on construction sites as well as helping to
maintain buildings decades after they have been commissioned.
JLG has continued to develop its offering in the region; bring-
ing in products that are robust enough to stand the rigours of
construction work. Ranging from mid-size working height to its
flagship product - the 1500AJP (introduced at Bauma in 2016 and
currently the largest articulating boom lift worldwide) - its prod-
ucts have built a strong track record of being reliable assets in
increasing efficiency and productivity on construction sites, such
as the recently updated LRT series of rough-terrain scissor lifts.
It has also completely redesigned its 600 series telescopic boom
lifts – the 600S and 660SJ adding features such as the
JLG SkyGuard enhanced control panel protection
system as standard equipment.
It has also expanded its BIM (building informa-
tion modelling) library, to include its compact
crawler booms, making the full JLG product
line available for download on www.
bimobject.com; ensuring users have
the benefit of specifications
that look and act as the real
equipment would on

LiuGong
Mas Paints
LiuGong was first founded in the city of Liuzhou in Southern
China over six decades ago. Since manufacturing the first
modern wheel loader for its domestic market, LiuGong has
grown to become a global leader in the production of a full
range of extreme duty construction equipment. LiuGong has
achieved considerable progress in several markets, particular-
ly in India, where it is experiencing a rapid rise in demand.
Driving much of this progress has been the global launch of
its LiuGong H-series wheel loaders and E-series excavators
(the LiuGong Tier 4 product line up also continues to grow).
While some Chinese manufacturers are considered to be rela-
tively conservative when it comes to developing its new tech-
nology, LiuGong hasn’t been afraid to stretch its current product
offering beyond its well-regarded loaders and excavators.
The company celebrated its 60th anniversary at the end
of 2018 and also passed a significant milestone with the
production of its 400,000th wheel loader. During a celebra-
tion event bringing its global customers to the LiuGong
International Industrial Park in Liuzhou, Guangxi, China,
the company also launched six new products including the
990F excavator, B170DL bulldozer, S935 sugarcane harvest-
er, TC800C5 crane, 4180D motor grader and 886H loader.
All the machines made their debut at the ceremony, fully
demonstrating the array of LiuGong's current generation of
large-scale and intelligent equipment.

MB Crushers
For nearly two decades, MB has been the leader in the fields
of crushing, demolition, and recycling, by designing, produc-
ing, and selling the very first jaw bucket crusher. MB offers the
largest line of patented crusher buckets all over the world. With
extensive innovation and development, MB produces a com-
plete range of crusher and screening buckets, drum-cutters and
grapples for excavators, skid loaders, and backhoes of all sizes.
Founded and headquartered in Italy, the family-owned com-
pany controls seven international subsidiaries with logistic
centres located on different continents, as well as an extensive
MB Crushers network of authorised dealers and service support
throughout the world.
MB crusher buckets’ versatility of use and advantages have
enabled companies to significantly boost their production levels.
The crusher buckets tackle the material directly on site and
allows the product that require crushing to be collected by plac-
ing it in a mound on the truck or directly on the site to be filled
in, thus speeding up operations.
MB Crusher’s products are being used by operators across the
region, helping them save time and costs in their road-construc-
tion, mining, and demolition operations. In its quest to find new
solutions to recycle inert waste at low cost, MB Crusher has
created a product range that allows companies to manage the
full cycle of crushing and recycling at the site, thus simplifying
crushing, screening, and handling of aggregates while saving
time and money. ''Crushing and recycling has become a key
aspect of mining and crushing operations and the need to make
the most of all available material has prompted astute opera-
tors to use the waste material which once was simply piled up,
thrown away or brought to a disposal site,” says Najmeddine
Sahraoui, deputy general manager for Middle East and Africa.

Raimondi Cranes
Raimondi Cranes (Raimondi), founded
in 1863, is a heritage European manu-
facturer of cranes across four ranges:
topless tower, luffing jib, hammer-
head, and self-erecting. Recognised
globally for its contribution to in-
novative solutions in the heavy lifting
machinery segment, Raimondi Cranes
is headquartered in its heritage home
of Legnano, Milan, Italy. Acquired in
2013 by KBW Investments (KBW),
Raimondi has since seen a market
resurgence and improved footprint
across several of its established
markets, together with reinvigorated
market support, loyalty, and confi-
dence. The renewal of global interest
in Raimondi’s products largely stems
from the aggressive turnaround mea-
sures put into place post acquisition
by KBW.
The turnaround measures included
restructuring, expenditure analysis,
redistribution of existing assets, an
increase in tier one talent acquisition
in both technical and commercial
spaces, marked resources allocated to
research and development (R&D) that
allowed for new product launches,
highly active marketing public rela-
tions and advertising schemas, and
the institution of a multitiered digital
presence.
The Raimondi MRT234 and MRT15
topless tower cranes enjoyed inter-
est ahead of their launches as did the
flagship luffer of its new range, the
18t LR330, which debuted at the Big

manufacturing of cranes, Raimondi
also produces relevant accessories

including crane cabins, elevators,

Deluxe R16 crane cabin has gener-
ated an additional revenue stream for
Raimondi and continues to receive
market accolades for its solution-
based design enhancing operator

onsite agility and safety.
Raimondi Cranes Middle East owns
a fully operational yard in the UAE
and, via its in-house teams of techni-
cians and engineering specialists, it
can offer multiple services to clients
across the GCC.
The ability to straddle a wide range
of disciplines ensures the company
can also accommodate the increas-
ingly complex demands of contractors
and developers. Bespoke operations
are increasingly in popularity both
in the MENA region and throughout
Europe. The increasing complexity of
jobsites, specifically those in densely
built up areas, require expert and
astute site planning; and from new
sales to site-planning, Raimondi’s
client care specialists, led by the
experienced Wael Hasan (who joined
as commercial manager of the MENA
region in 2017) provide in-depth
consultation regardless of size and
scope on a huge range of activi-
ties such as: rentals, crane planning,
crane operation methodology, crane
erection and dismantle, spare parts
and service contracts, anti-collision
systems, base and tie leg design, in-
house client-side training, and service

Renault
Trucks
RMD
Kwikform
Renault Trucks remains the market leader for European
manufacturers in the French-speaking countries of the
region. It is also proving that it can take on markets beyond
its historical strongholds in countries like Turkey where it
notched a 40% increase in volumes. Looking even further
afield it is reacting quickly to opportunities when they pres-
ent themselves, such as in Pakistan where the company has
scored a notable surge in demand despite stiff opposition
from Chinese and Asian truck-makers.
The past 18 months has seen the company utilise its newly
opened Greater Middle East facility to oversee both its new
and used sales efforts, as well as promote its suite of finance
services. The new office is part of an overall global strat-
egy to prepare Renault Trucks for growth and matches the
targeted roll-out of its latest vehicles in its popular K, C and
T ranges and its re-emergence in established markets like
Sudan and Ghana.
In the Optidriver system, Renault Trucks has arguably one
of the best transmissions in the market for maximising up-
time; and it has proven that it can deliver savings to fuel and
overall costs of maintenance and repairs. One of the biggest
challenges facing all commercial vehicles manufacturers in
the region is addressing fleet operator and truck-owner reluc-
tance to adopt the very latest in technology, even when it is
in their best interests. Renault Trucks, however, has benefited
from being able to work with importers that both understand
their own market as well as translate why the French truck-
maker’s vehicles make financial sense in the long-term.

which operate under the licensing and certification scheme.
All the production units are audited by external third-party
international certification bodies like TÜV Rhineland, Un-

The company’s newest production line is located in
Sriperumbudur, India in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is situ-

UD Trucks
Volvo Trucks
UD Trucks is known for its reliable and versatile truck ranges built
with robust and quality components and the promise of delivering
extra productivity and superior uptime. The venerable Japanese
truck-maker understands that more time spent on the road and less
time in the workshop drives success for its customers' businesses.
Indeed, since the company’s earliest beginnings, it has set out to
ensure that it produces the truck the world needs today.
In both its heavy-duty Quester and the medium-duty Croner,
it offers two vehicles that have been designed and tested for
the Middle East market to ensure they offer fleets and contrac-
tors value and reliability. UD Trucks has been part of the Volvo
Group since 2007 and a decade down the line, its latest ranges
retain their strong Japanese heritage and craftsmanship but also
utilise Volvo Group's global technology and sourcing while also
plugging into local manufacturing and customer support.
With UD Trucks also offering a comprehensive set of services,
such as UD Genuine Service and Parts, UD Driver Training, and
UD Trust Service Agreements, the Quester and Croner are able
to run and remain in optimum condition to go the extra mile,
saving minutes, hours, and days over the years.
The latest version of the Quester is notably robust and strong;
utilising a combination of global technology and Japanese crafts-
manship. The new range combines the best of three worlds;
UD’s heritage of Japanese craftsmanship and customer care,
Volvo Group’s global technology and aftersales know-how,
and cost efficiency through local know-how. Last year, saw
the introduction of the 6x4R-40 Tons and 8x4R variants of the
Quester trucks in the region. Including a hub reduction to 24in
and targeted at heavy construction, UD believes it now has a
complete range for the region.

Think Volvo. Think Safety. It’s a well-worn view of the Swed-
ish brand, but as Volvo Trucks approaches its 92nd anniversary,
the company says it is well on the way to making progress in
its mission to have zero truck accidents on the world’s roads,
including the Middle East.
Volvo Trucks has been active in the region for five decades
and its vehicles have played an invaluable role in many impor-
tant projects and developments in the Middle East ever since.
The brand is well-recognised for its industry leading technology
and has proven that buyers in the region will invest in cutting-
edge technology such as its I-Shift automatic transmission,
which ensures that the truck is always in the most fuel-efficient
drive mode, if they can see the benefit in terms of productivity
and safety. The Volvo Trucks range is one of the most advanced
available in the market. Since launching I-Shift in the market at
the turn of the decade, it has successfully launched new tech-
nology and services such as I-Shift with Crawler Gears, Volvo
Dynamic Steering, and its fleet management system Dynafleet.
Whether it is the long-haul FH or the heavy-duty trucks for
construction such as the FM and FMX, fleets and contractors
will benefit from a series of features designed to optimise their
operations. Volvo has one of the strongest reputations for safety
and recently moved closer to perfecting the Volvo Dynamic
Steering system last year by integrating two accident prevention
driver support systems: Volvo Dynamic Steering with Stability
Assist and Volvo Dynamic Steering with Lane Keeping Assist.

// Interview
Francis Alfred is the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Sobha Realty. He talks
to us about the rise of Sobha Realty and what makes them to be one of the leading
developers in the region
Tell us what your own goals and
objectives for Sobha Realty are
and how do you wish to achieve
them.
We are seeing strong demand from
Chinese Investors over the past few
quarters and we are definitely active
with our sales & marketing plans for
this market. At Sobha, we believe in
delivering high-quality homes. Being
the foremost backward integrated real
estate developer in the world, we have
our in-house teams for design and
construction who have been delivering
high-quality projects for decades now.
We believe that our focus on timely
and perfectly choreographed delivery
experience to the customer will be
more beneficial in the long run rather
than offering promotions, freebies etc.
As the Hartland community, with its
open spaces and operational schools,
is taking shape with the delivery of
Greens Phase I, we are seeing a lot of
interest from buyers in our events and
Open houses. We are of the view that
Be Home With Sobha
the best brand ambassador for any de-
veloper is the quality of the delivered
product and that has created a lot of
interest for us from potential buyers.
Can you tell us about the latest
projects that Sobha Reality is
involved in?
2018 has been an excellent year with
unprecedented growth and achieve-
ments for Sobha Realty. We refreshed
our corporate brand and rechristened
it as ‘Sobha Realty’ in 2018 and pre-
sented a new identity for our flagship
‘Sobha Hartland’. By mid-2018 we
began the handover for our flagship
product - Phase 1 of Hartland Greens
apartments and have recently launched
the much-awaited upper floors of
the Creek Vistas. The next phase of
delivery which includes the 4 & 5 BR
Hartland Estate villas and Townhouses
are now getting ready for timely
completion and delivery. Additionally,
the exquisite landscape for 30% of the
Sobha Hartland community which is
dedicated to green and open spaces
is progressing at a rapid pace. This
only reiterates the company’s commit-
ment to the Middle East region and
with Sobha Realty, we present homes
which embody the founder’s vision of
the finest in luxury living.
Tell us how in the last few years
Sobha Realty has grown and what
has sustained this growth?
Sobha Realty is the personal obsession
of our Founder Chairman, Mr. PNC
Menon, founder of one of the world’s
most successful and respected real estate
companies – Sobha Realty. The legend
was born way back in 1976 in Oman
where Mr. Menon established the roots
of the company with very humble be-
ginnings but with a passion and determi-
nation to create the very best in terms of
quality and craftsmanship.
Over the course of 8 years, he
developed a strong bond with Oman,
a country which provided him with a
strong foundation and “backbone” that
Page 55
construction business news me // February 2019 //

55
has enabled him to achieve greater
success in the years ahead.
Tell us why Sobha Realty is unique
compared to its competitors?
Today, Sobha Realty is the foremost
backward integrated company known
in the world with all the key com-
petencies and in-house resources to
deliver a project from conceptualiza-
tion to completion. With a reputa-
tion for unmatched construction and
interiors, as of September 2017, Sobha
Group in India has completed about
95 million square feet of area. Our do-
main expertise ranges from real estate,
contractual, design & engineering and
construction & material support.
With a 42-year tradition of develop-
ing world-class homes and offices,
our founder decided it was time to
raise the bar even higher. Focusing
on his belief that key elements that
make a real home are a great design,
unmatched service, and uncompromis-
ing quality, Mr. Menon seeks to create
sublime environments that would be
home to the world’s most discerning.
With a single-minded focus to build
a brand that consistently delivers the
highest level of design, workmanship,
and service, he pursues his vision to
create the very best, for the very best.
Can you tell us about the current
construction and real estate
market and how it is positively
impacting the company?
Our expectations from 2019 are
strongly positive and the year will wit-
ness a large number of Sobha homes
approximately 1000 units getting
handed over to our customers. We also
plan to launch many more prestigious
projects within Hartland including the
Hartland Club which will essentially
serve the Hartland Community. With
more people choosing Dubai as their
home this year, we foresee the number
to increase significantly further leading
to higher residential demand.
At these times when customers have
many options, we see a trend of
customers moving towards qualita-
tive developers who deliver projects
above the market standards in terms
of Product Quality, Amenities, and
Timely Deliveries. With Dubai boasting
of 149 nationalities living in the city,
there will be an interesting trend of
‘first-time homeownership’.
What does Sobha Realty expect to
achieve in the next few years?
The market has been soft for the
past few years and could soften in
the coming years, but we are seeing
some upward traction in the last few
months which was mainly driven by
huge demand from first-time home
buyers towards the end of 2017. As
far as the quality luxury market is
concerned, demand is always stable
as the buyers are more discerning and
go by the long-term potential returns
which a good location and good qual-
ity guarantees. Dubai govt. is keenly
focused on initiatives to make the
market attractive and we should see an
upward swing in the market uptake in
the coming years.
For us, the need to be uncom-
promising in terms of quality, space
and location is a must. Amongst the
array of offering in Sobha Hartland
located in the heart of the city, we
have recently added affordable luxury
to Sobha’s portfolio through a very
innovative product - “CREEK VISTAS”
without compromising the Sobha
signature quality standards by effective
space utilization.
What are the future challenges
that you foresee and how does
Sobha Realty overcome it?
At Sobha, we remain quite optimis-
tic of 2019 as more and more Sobha
Homes are being completed on time
and delivered to the customers. With
the launch of our new brand identity,
we expect momentum to our sales.
Discerning investors/end-users seek
quality and timely delivery and we are
strong on both those suits primarily
due to our Sobha signature quality and
unique backward integration model.

// Event
The 21st edition of the world’s leading trade for security, safety, and fire protection took place from
20-22 January 2019, with more than 1,200 exhibitors from 54 countries
Intersec 2019 Review
Live-action firefighting and emergency
rescue operations, drone demonstra-
tions, and a revamped conference
discussing Artificial Intelligence, safety
planning for cities of the future, and
securing the Dubai Expo 2020, are
some key features of Intersec 2019, as
the final preparations are laid ahead of
its big opening in Dubai next week.
The annual three-day event is organ-
ised by Messe Frankfurt Middle East,
and supported by the Dubai Police,
Dubai Police Academy, Dubai Civil
Defence, the Security Industry Regula-
tory Agency (SIRA), and the Dubai
Municipality, along with a further 35
international government partners,
trade associations, and non-profit insti-
tutions aimed at advancing the global
security, safety, and fire protection
landscape.
According to analysts 6WResearch,
the Middle East market for physical
and perimeter security, commercial
and information security, fire protec-
tion, and drones, is currently worth a
combined US$14.5 billion. This is esti-
mated to grow at a compound annual
growth rate of 13.5 percent over the
next six years, valuing US$31 billion
in 2024.
Physical, perimeter, and commercial
security, comprising monitoring and
surveillance systems, restricted entry
systems, access control, intrusion de-
tection, and perimeter security, holds
the lion’s share of the market, valuing
US$10.8 billion in 2018, and estimated
to more than double in value over the
next six years to be worth US$23 bil-
lion by 2024.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE are the
key contributors, currently comprising
nearly 60 percent of the market for
physical, perimeter, and commercial
security (US$6.48 billion), on account
of favourable government regula-
tions, infrastructure development, and
adoption of new technologies across
industry verticals such as retail, hospi-
tality, banking, aviation, transport, oil

& gas, and constructions.
NAFFCO, one of the world’s largest
producers of life safety and fire protec-
tion and are also the founding sponsor
of Intersec 2019. CEO of NAFFCO,
Eng. Khalid Al Khatib, tells us about
the importance of this event. “In 1999
I remember Intersec was half a hall at
that time, and now I believe it’s the
strongest exhibition for fire and safety
in the world that is organised annually.
It has a strong presence; it’s an inter-
national show, not just for the UAE.
We have visitors from all over the
world in addition to local consultants.
Every year, anyone visiting the show
can see that it’s growing. Intersec is
now a necessity for any fire company
or consultancy wishing to be present
in the Middle East.”
Artificial Intelligence and IoT
During the event there was the
“Intersec Future Security Summit,
where Future Foresight on Security,
Artificial Intelligence, along with the
Internet of Things (IoT) and Intelli-
gent Systems” was among the central
themes at Intersec.
Martin Gren, Co-Founder of Axis
Communications, and the inventor of
the world’s first IP-Network camera,
was among the headline speakers,
offering his view on the future of the
global security industry.
“We see security needs increasing
and new applications are enabled by
new and complementing technolo-
gies,” said Gren, adding that while AI
has shown tremendous improvements
over the last few years, it’s still at an
early stage.
“Everyone expects to see industry
disruption from AI and Deep Learning,
and this is an area that Axis are heavily
investing in, but I think the true bene-
fits are still several years away. Instead
you will see AI help with regular basic
algorithms, and personally, I think
the market for audio is going to move
from analog to IP as it’s still currently
98 percent analog.”
Gren said the Middle East and the
UAE in particular have always been
an innovator in security and security
technologies, on account of the region
having limited exposure to traditional
analog technologies.
“The Middle East was an early
adopter of technology, and I think the
UAE has shown a scale and willing-
ness to invest that is much stronger
than most other countries,” continued
Gren. “This has given a modern, and
upgraded, network of smart and intel-
ligent systems that is quite unique.”
Fire safety trucks
Both Bristol and Rosenbauer re-
vealed their new specialty fire safety
trucks at Intersec.
Bristol showcased a UAE-built
firetruck, superior fire suppression
systems and powerful water pump
solutions, to leaders in the security and
safety industry.
A regular exhibitor at Intersec and
one of the region’s most respected fire
safety and engineering companies,
Bristol’s presence is dominated by
the large-scale Al Shallal firefighting
truck, made in the UAE to strict US-led
design and specification guidelines.
The Al Shallal is a heavy-duty indus-
trial fire truck built to serve clients in
the regional and global oil and gas,
power and industrial sectors as well as
municipal civil defense units.
Designed to combat flammable
liquid and gas fires, the Al Shallal
truck can tackle a range of large-scale
emergencies with its highly effective
‘attack’ capabilities.
Able to flow upwards up to 40,000
liters of water and foam per minute
through its three roof-monitors, the Al
Shallal truck also carries dry chemical
powder that can be applied to a blaze us-
ing its patented Hydro-chem technology.
Mahmoud Awad, Managing Direc-
tor of Bristol, said: “As a regional
leader with global presence, in the
field of fire safety and protection,
Bristol is proud to consistently bring
the latest technologies to our clients
in the local market through our par-
ticipation at Intersec.
While Rosenbauer unveiled ‘TI-
GON’, dubbed as a ‘radically designed,
extraordinarily all-terrain specialty
firefighting vehicle for industrial use.
“The special vehicle combines
proven off-road expertise from Tatra
and optimally designed drive compo-
nents with outstanding extinguishing
technology from Rosenbauer,” said
Christian Mairzedt, Senior Vice Presi-
dent and Head of the Middle East and
North Africa at Rosenbauer.
“The Rosenbauer TIGON is one of
the most all-terrain, variable, and long-
lasting industrial vehicles worldwide.
Its powerful performance makes it one
of the most extraordinary fire fighting
vehicles of our time.”

Volvo Trucks is one of the largest heavy-
duty truck brands in the world and is
sold and serviced in more than 130
countries all over the world.
Mohammed Sameer, an experienced
Marketing & Communications executive
with a demonstrated history of working
in the automotive industry gives a brief
insight on Volvo marketing strategy in
the region.
“Our strategy revolves around satisfied
and productive customers and in this;
we're supported by over 2100 dealer-
ships and workshops. Volvo Trucks are
assembled in 15 countries across the
globe. Therefore, we are doing a good
job in the Middle East and in other mar-
kets,” said Mohammed.
Mohammed initially started with
Volvo Group in 2014 after his Master’s
Degree from University of Wollongong
in Dubai. Specializing in Marketing
and International Business and gaining
core knowledge about business. He is
responsible for Marketing and Commu-
nication for the Middle East region for
Volvo Trucks brand.
Volvo Trucks established the Regional
Parts Distribution Centre and the Region-
al Competence Development Centre at
Jebel Ali Free Zone as a regional office
for Middle East on 20 March 2006.
“Since then the new facility has
helped in strengthening supplies of
spare parts, improve the competence
of our retailers and dealers in the
Middle East.”
Truck reliability and durability is
important and Volvo prides itself when it
comes to its trucks safety.
“It is who we are. It is built into our
brand heritage and culture. It is a signifi-
cant part of the Volvo DNA. Safety is the
kind of work that never stops. That is
why we have painstakingly compiled ac-
cident data since 1969. That is almost 50
years of continuous analysis from more
than 1700 accidents. It is a huge com-
mitment and one that we take very seri-
ously. So we have positioned ourselves
in Safety which is one of the core values
and then into Quality and Environmental
care,” remarked Mohammed.
“Quality is a pre-requisite for profit in
the service industry. By guaranteeing our
trucks are available to work 100% of the
time, we maximize uptime, productivity
and help increase profits for our custom-
ers,” said Mohammed
The market also has drastically
changed in terms of products and tech-
nology according to Mohammed.
“We are very much focused on the
products quality that are produced
and they go through various tests and
demos to ensure the quality that is being
delivered to our customers. As we un-
derstand that how important, it is for our
customer to keep their trucks up and
running for their businesses.”
“We are focusing on sales of construc-
tion range, better results in service and
parts sale as well,” added Mohammed.
“There are always challenges in
the business and that is how we
grow, we accept the challenges,”
concluded Mohammed.
We talked to Mohammed Sameer, Marketing & Communications, Volvo Group, about the
company’s Marketing strategy in the Middle East what makes them stand out
