BUILDING RETROFIT PROGRAM
The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy
(DoE) has announced the completion of
the Emirate’s first Energy Saving Perfor-
mance Contracting (ESPC) pilot project
encompassing eight retrofitted govern-
ment buildings.
The Building Retrofit program is a part
of Abu Dhabi’s Demand Side Manage-
ment and Energy Rationalisation Strategy
2030, which aims for a 22% reduction in
energy consumption and a 32% reduc-
tion in water consumption over the next
decade.
One of the nine key programs of the
DSM strategy, building retrofitting aims
for significant cost savings, system reli-
ability and environmental benefits, in line
with the vision of Abu Dhabi and UAE’s
national strategies for sustainability.
Building Retrofit aims to improve ener-
gy efficiency in the buildings while generat-
ing savings and reducing costs to building
owners, tenants and the government. Eight
government buildings including Abu Dha-
bi Distribution Company (ADDC), Abu
Dhabi Transmission and Despatch Com-
pany (TRANSCO), Al Ain Distribution
Company (AADC), and Emirates Water
and Electricity Company (EWEC), par-
ticipated in the retrofitting project to study
energy efficiency by introducing a number
of energy conservation measures.
The pilot project is the first for govern-
ment/public buildings, which follows the
ESPC model and utilises private ESCOs
to implement energy and water conserva-
tion measures. The pilot will not only im-
prove existing building efficiency but also
develop the market for ESCO. The project
has shown an initial average energy saving
of 38% across the eight buildings, and it
is expected to have far-reaching economic
impact once the ESCO model is adopted
across the board.

Deyaar
Development
PJSC
(“Deyaar”), one of Dubai’s
leading property developers
and real estate service provid-
ers, has announced the com-
pletion and handover of Dania
District, part of its award-win-
ning Midtown development.
Dania District is the sec-
ond district to be completed
in Midtown’s integrated ur-
ban community, which is
composed of six districts. In
2019, Afnan District was an-
nounced as completed.
Located in Dubai Produc-
tion City near Sheikh Mo-
hammed bin Zayed Road,
Midtown is designed with
community living in mind,
creating
a
family-friendly
environment complete with
a wide range of amenities.
Deyaar has so far accom-
plished 50% of the project
by completing the Afnan and
Dania Districts, which consti-
tute 13 buildings of different
heights containing more than
1,200 apartments. The com-
pany is preparing to launch
new districts soon to com-
plete the remaining phases.
Midtown comprises six dis-
tricts, composed of 26 build-
ings across a built-up area
of almost five million square
feet. The development of-
fers over 2,000 units, ranging
from studios through to three-
bedroom apartments. Homes
in Midtown overlook a green
courtyard, offering space that
is both personal and secure.
There are facilities available to
cater to both leisure and prac-
tical needs, including a dedi-
cated day care facility, fam-
ily pool and lap pool, health
club, tennis and basketball
courts, and more.
Comprising six buildings,
Dania District has a total of
579 residential units, includ-
ing studio apartments, one-
, two-, and three-bedroom
apartments. Proving an at-
tractive property investment,
more than 95% of units in
Dania District have already
been purchased.
Saeed Al Qatami, CEO of
Deyaar, said: “We’re start-
ing off 2020 on a high note,
with the completion and im-
minent handover of Dania,
the second district in our
Midtown development. It
gives us a great sense of
pride to welcome more resi-
dents into this iconic project,
which residents are already
calling home after moving
into Afnan District over the
last few months. Midtown
is unique in that it offers
safe and secure family liv-
ing within a community that
promotes a healthy lifestyle.
More than this, it offers con-
venience for residents, with
full amenities available with-
in Midtown, in addition to
its ideal location within easy
reach of major destinations
within Dubai.”
There is more than 30,000
sq ft of retail area between
Midtown’s Dania and Af-
nan Districts, with a wide
variety of outlets including
anchor supermarket, nurs-
ery, F&B and more, such as
service providers, health and
beauty and entertainment.
Midtown’s retail offering will
meet the needs of residents
and visitors alike, with ample
parking available for all. Dey-
aar is meticulously selecting
retail tenants to ensure the
best brands and outlet variety
throughout the project.
Listed on the Dubai Finan-
cial Market, Deyaar is one
of Dubai’s leading develop-
ers, with real estate ventures
spanning key growth cor-
ridors and prime locations
within the emirate. Over the
years, Deyaar has delivered
an extensive portfolio of
commercial, residential and
hospitality properties, all of-
fering the highest levels of
service and quality.

Qiddiya has awarded a con-
tract to Saudi Pan Kingdom
Company (SAPAC) to build
perimeter fencing as con-
struction ramps up at the
site.
SAPAC,

established
Saudi construction com-
pany will place security
fencing around the entire
premises of Qiddiya, the
Kingdom’s Capital of En-
tertainment, Sports and the
Arts. This first layer of se-
curity will enable a slew of
construction projects, set
to begin this year, to begin
bringing in heavy construc-
tion machinery and restrict
unauthorized access to the
site.
“With the signing of this
12-month contract, the first
phase of developing Qid-
diya’s
security
protocol
has commenced. We are
proud to work with an ex-
perienced Saudi company
as we set out to create
the Kingdom’s Capital of
Entertainment, Sports and
the Arts,” said Salman Al-
Hubeis, Executive Director
– Infrastructure & Area De-
velopment at Qiddiya.
The contract work in-
cludes
440,000
square
meters of site clearing as
part of the site preparation
process, 20 km of security
fencing, and 23 km of cable
barriers, as well as 1 mil-
lion cubic meters of earth-
works to be filled.
Saleh bin Salim AlHar-
bi, CEO of SAPAC, said:
“For over 25 years, we’ve
worked with leading firms
in the country. We are
thrilled to work with Qid-

Construction Business News ME sat down with Gerard Evenden, Senior Executive Partner
– Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, to discuss the Mobility Pavilion Project
MOVING ON UP
Gerard’s interest in innovation, ma-
terials and new building techniques,
is evident in his global experience
and demonstrated by award winning
projects across the world. Added to
his resume of designs is the Mobility
Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
There are three Thematic Districts
in the Expo 2020 site, reflecting the
mega-event’s three subthemes of Op-
portunity, Mobility and Sustainability.
Construction of the districts was com-
pleted in May 2019.
The three petal-shaped Thematic
Districts are central to the design of
the masterplan and are connected to
the central Al Wasl Plaza, set to be
the next iconic structure of Dubai.
Each features Country Pavilions and
is anchored by a Thematic Pavilion
relating to the theme of that district.
The Thematic Districts also include a
variety of F&B options, performance
spaces, innovation galleries and art
installations and outdoor gardens.
Each Thematic District is distin-
guishable by shapes and colours that
give them distinct characteristics: the
Sustainability District uses circles and
green shades; the Mobility District uses
triangles and blue (for water or move-
ment); and the Opportunity District
is based around squares and a warm
sand colour. The shapes are on one
hand abstract, but they also have roots
in Islamic geometry.
INSPIRATION
“This is started in Shanghai and the
journey that started to produce a pa-
vilion, then we were asked could we
move that pavilion to a later date and
luckily it came earlier enough in the
process for us to make it move and it
ended up in Abu Dhabi.”
The Mobility Pavilion will provide
visitors with an exciting and thought-
provoking experience, demonstrating
how mobility has driven mankind’s
development throughout our existence
- from our very first steps out of Africa
until the interconnected digital world
of today. The pavilion addresses the
new mobility technologies transform-
ing the way we live, learn and play
through the creation of Smart Cities
using the likes of Artificial Intelligence,
Big Data, robotics, machine learning
and autonomous transport.
“We were then approached to
enter the competition for the Mobil-
ity Pavilion. We are obsessed by the
relationship between what’s hap-
pening in mobility, the environment
and construction of buildings and we
thought that was a fantastic subject,”
said Gerard.
A feat of design, architecture and engi-
neering, designed by Foster & Partners,
symbolising movement, consisting of 7
stories and unique interior features. The
ribbed and curved shape of the Mobil-
ity Pavilion was designed by award-
winning British architectural design and
engineering firm Foster + Partners.
“We were then approached to
enter the competition for the mobility
pavilion. We are obsessed by the re-
lationship between what’s happening
Page 19
construction business news me // march 2020 //
www.cbnme.com
19
in mobility, the environment and con-
struction of buildings and we thought
that was a fantastic subject.
We want a building that goes
beyond the Expo 2020 Dubai and
have a legacy and how did we plan
to achieve that? There were three sub
themes to the Mobility Pavilion which
were physical, digital and unified and
so those three sub themes created a
tri-fold building,” Gerard explained.
Due to the size of the area, Gerard
explained how the pavilion would
allow tens of thousands of people to
move around the pavilion.
“The great thing about the trifold
building is that you can create a
central hub. If we move people up
through the central hub to reach the
top of the building. So it avoids people
having to strain their energy to get to
the top of the building and we allow
them instead to filter down form the
top of the building. So they can filter
around the three sub themes around
the building.”
SUSTAINABLE PROJECT
The project’s main contractors are
ALEC Engineering and Contracting and
with sustainability being the forefront
of the Mobility Pavilion they were
tasked along with Fosters + Partners
to come up with a sustainable design.
Due to the Mobility Pavilion being one
of the largest projects in Expo 2020, it
would be generating waste each day
that in several ways could harm not
only the neighbouring project but also
the environment.
“When it comes to constructing
buildings you are generating a lot
of carbon. So as we go through the
carbon counting in the building and
as we move this building from Expo
mode to Legacy mode, what we
didn’t want to do was to create excess
carbon. We want to limit the amount
of carbon that goes into the building,”
said Gerard.
The project has achieved the gold
rating certification from Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED). LEED considers the Mobility
project to be a great contributor in
implementing a sustainable site, en-
ergy savings, water efficiency, carbon
emissions reduction, and improved
indoor environmental quality.

// talking Point
Construction companies can no longer ignore digitisation of industry
By Andrew Skudder, CEO of CCS
POWER OF
DIGITISATION
Accelerating digitisation is one of
the main trends for the construction
industry in 2020. This means construc-
tion companies need to find software
solutions that serve them best.
While they may consider investing
in generic software that spans multiple
industries, this type of software will
not address the many unique aspects
of the construction industry, for ex-
ample, the practice of using multiple
subcontractors.
In this respect, project managers
and construction companies should be
looking for best-of-breed software that
embraces the nuances of the industry.
The software they choose should be
backed up with excellent implementa-
tion, training and support.
A critical aspect to consider is the
industry expertise that can be found in
the software provider’s team mem-
bers. Are they mere techies or are they
people who have come out of the
industry and capable of applying their
industry knowledge to help construc-
tion companies embed best practice
into their operations?
In addition, the accelerating pace of
software development and technologi-
cal change means construction compa-
nies need to find software vendors that
have local scale or are part of a group
of companies that have innovation at
their core.
Importantly, good construction soft-
ware must offer the following benefits
to ensure construction companies
maximise their profitability and ef-
ficiency:
COST PROJECTION
Successfully delivering construction
projects within the critical factors of
time and budget relies on being in
control of costs and performance
management.
The real benefit of cost management
software is its ability to forecast costs
throughout the lifecycle of a project.
The only way to forecast is to get an
accurate view of how much has been
spent to date and how much will be
spent going forward.
This is difficult to achieve without
software because of the enormous
amount of data that needs to be
considered and the numerous moving
parts that make up a construction proj-
ect. Software that does this in real time
is the most effective. It allows costs to
be accrued as soon they have been
incurred. This means no waiting for an
actual invoice to be delivered for the
cost to be recognised.
By way of example, when readymix
concrete is delivered to a construction
site, it arrives with a delivery note. The
construction company has accrued the
cost even though it may only receive
the invoice several days later. By this
time the project will have moved on
and readymix concrete needs may
have changed, possibly resulting in too
much or too little readymix concrete
on site if projections are inaccurate.
Construction software should fully
integrate all aspects of a project from
estimating right through to handover
and should provide access to detailed
reports and analytics at any stage.
MANAGEMENT OF SUBCONTRACTORS
Subcontractors are playing an increas-
ingly prominent role in construction
projects globally. With lead contrac-
tor’s adopting more of a project
Page 21
construction business news me // march 2020 //
www.cbnme.com
21
management role, they often have to
manage multiple subcontractors.
This has prompted the need for
particular tools to manage subcontrac-
tors, which is a much more complex
process than, for instance, procuring
materials. Good construction software
offers supply management solutions
covering tenders, quotes, job alloca-
tion and full invoicing (factoring the
specific requirements of milestone
reporting, completion certificates and
payments/invoicing).
COST VALUE RECONCILIATION
Construction software mitigates risk
and manages both cost and time by
intuitively constructing valuations and
cost reports relevant to the cost value
reconciliation (CVR) process. Monitor-
ing and measuring actual expendi-
ture against budgeted and forecasted
project expenditure provides a running
account of the project’s profitability by
comparing cost and value throughout
the entire project lifecycle.
FINANCIAL OPERATIONS (FINOPS)
MANAGEMENT
Effective software ensures business
intelligence is fully up to date and
available for reporting on all op-
erational and financial aspects and
at company and project level. This
is critical in today’s modern business
environment where management need
to be fully appraised of the status at
any given time while allowing compa-
nies to manage and adapt to obstacles
and challenges effectively and without
unwelcome hidden surprises.
PLANT MANAGEMENT
Getting the most effective use of
resources, whether rented or owned is
essential in cost efficiency. Not many
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) sys-
tems incorporate a purpose-built plant
module to deal with the management
of construction equipment and small
tools. Industry-specific tools are needed
to deal with industry-specific nu-
ances, for example, in the construction
industry, a project manager has two
choices – to hire from a third party or
to use internal resources. This requires
the consideration of cost and availabil-
ity. When it comes to cost, capital and
operating costs need to be factored in
and this requires information.
Software creates the environment
to effectively make the right decision,
allowing the project manager to factor
in trade-offs, conduct analysis and
determine what the best option is.
Ultimately, a full plant manage-
ment system allows project managers
to know exactly when equipment
is available – especially if there are
multiple projects on the go – and how
it can be allocated more effectively.
All equipment can be tracked and
reported by resource type, current
location and cost (charge rate) to plan
and forecast its best utilisation.
By embracing digitisation and
investing in software that offers these
compelling benefits, construction com-
panies will be better placed to reduce
risk, streamline processes, improve
efficiencies and increase profitability.

sectors. A keen focus on sustainability
has been the most important underly-
ing element of our continued success,”
said Mr. Jamal.
For 2020, the market will continue
to be challenging for the facilities man-
agement market but due to Imdaad’s
unique competitive advantage Mr.
Jamal is confident overcoming their
challenges.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi have tradi-
tionally remained key growth markets
in the UAE. However, the industry is
picking up in other emirates such as
Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah. At Im-
daad, we have expanded our footprint
across the country through service
contracts.
“Our strong portfolio of diverse
and specialized services will continue
to offer us a competitive edge in the
business. We will carry on with our
efforts to manage costs and increase
efficiency without compromising on
quality.”
Furthermore Mr. Jamal pointed out:
“There is a growing trend of construc-
tion companies entering the facilities
management business. This shift is not
easy. Our industry demands expertise
in understanding the evolving custom-
er needs, retaining clients, and balanc-
ing the cost of services with the quality
of services. The entry of new players is
not only leading to unhealthy competi-
tion, pricing pressure and shrinking
margins, but also causes reputational
risk. Clients are increasingly demand-
ing price cuts, which will adversely
affect the quality of services provided.
Imdaad has built a stellar reputation in
the market and we will never compro-
mise on quality.”
The potential growth isn’t just
limited to the UAE as other countries
around the GCC are picking up pace
regional governments have implement-
ed numerous social and economic
reforms to stimulate the private sector.

In addition, there are several infra-
structure projects, including airports,
roadways, ports, and railways, under
development. On account of these, the
facilities management industry holds
bright prospects for growth.
Mr. Jamal points to Saudi Arabia as
one of countries as a prime example
where business can flourish under
these reforms: “Saudi Arabia will be
the next big market for FM businesses
given the unprecedented pace of
economic activity taking place in the
Kingdom. Imdaad has been exploring
opportunities to extend our reach to
the country. Oman is also emerging
as a key growth market. We have es-
tablished our presence in the Sultan-
ate through our subsidiary Imdaad Al
Batinah, which provides solid waste
management, landfill management,
and specialized waste management
services in the governorates of Al Bati-
nah North and Musandam.”
TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABLE
IMPLEMENTATION
A big believer in innovation and
foreseeing change, Lootah is a lifelong
learner who reads extensively about
past and present business and technol-
ogy leaders like Steve Jobs and Jack
Welch.
“Technology, policy and processes,
and people are the mainstays of
Imdaad’s sustainable growth. The
company has always remained at the
forefront of technology adoption,
enabling itself to take advantage of
new possibilities in adding value to its
service offerings. Our constant pursuit
of product innovation offers us a com-
petitive advantage in the market.
We study and test any new technol-
ogy before adopting it to ensure that it
meets the current and future needs of
our customers and is suitable for the
market. For instance, not all technolo-
gies used in Europe can be brought
to the UAE as we have a completely
different climate here. The integration
of new technology will lead to higher
costs; however, our clients understand
that innovative products and solutions
will offer significant cost savings in the
future,” Mr. Jamal explained.
Sustainability has become a serious
factor and a necessity for a number
of companies hiring facilities man-
agement professionals for leading,
implementing, educating and enabling
sustainable practice within their busi-
ness. Sustainability in facilities manage-
ment is about making smart decisions
that will reduce business’s negative
impact on the environment.
Furthermore, there have been a
number of initiatives taken by the UAE
government to ensure that buildings
follow the best sustainable prac-
tices. For example, The Department
of Energy (Abu Dhabi) announced
the completion of the Emirate’s first
Energy Saving Performance Contract-
ing (ESPC) pilot project encompassing

eight retrofitted government buildings.
Take for example ‘The Building
Retrofit’ programme is a part of Abu
Dhabi’s Demand Side Management
and Energy Rationalisation Strategy
2030, which aims for a 22% reduction
in energy consumption and a 32%
reduction in water consumption over
the next decade.
“Sustainability, to me, is all about
making use of the right tools and
equipment, while taking the environ-
ment into consideration. At Imdaad,
our products and services are devel-
oped with this philosophy in mind
whether it is Imtedaad, which provides
energy management solutions through
industry-leading technologies, Farz, a
state-of-the-art, automated materials
recovery facility, Vision Safety, which
offers installation and maintenance of
fire detection and protection systems,
or any other business division.
In keeping with our commitment to
the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda,
we strive to adopt sustainable practices
across all aspects of our operations. In
procurement, we carefully examine the
level of efficiency, energy consump-
tion, and carbon footprint of materials
and equipment we use before acquir-
ing them. For instance, we conduct
thorough research on the products
or tools we use in our fire safety or
façade cleaning services to ensure
they deliver long-lasting value to our
customers and are environmentally-
friendly,” said Mr. Jamal
LEADERSHIP FIGURE
Mr. Jamal is also the Co-founder and
President of the Middle East Facilities
Management Association (MEFMA), a
non-profit association supported by
the Real Estate Regulatory Authority
(RERA) that aims to establish a dedi-
cated resource for industry profession-
als seeking industry knowledge and
best practices for the facilities manage-
ment sector.
He explains why it’s crucial to have
such an association for the facilities
management industry:
“It has been playing a vital role
in driving growth and development
of the industry through various
initiatives including educational,
knowledge-sharing, networking,
and thought leadership programs.
As a collective voice for the indus-
try, MEFMA has also been engaging
governments and other entities on
regulations, pricing, and quality stan-
dards among others. Our mandates
also include providing a standardized
framework for facility management
professionals, wider construction
industry stakeholders and building
owners and tenants. We also place a
special emphasis on the development
of local talent to lead the industry in
the future.”
The most important quality of lead-
ers is their ability to have a strong
and transparent relationship with the
people they manage and work with
and Mr. Jamal exemplifies that.
“Ever since I started my career, I
have strived to stay close to my col-
leagues. I attach great importance to
listening to the people to understand
their viewpoints on every aspect of the
business. Also, I am a strong advocate
of continual improvement and I use
any opportunity to learn new things
because the pace with which changes
are happening is beyond belief. It
has become a necessity for a leader
to keep himself or herself informed
of developments as they take shape,”
concluded Mr. Jamal.

2019 SUCCESS
Arada enjoyed a successful 2019, with
the value of our sales rising by 33%
against the previous year, while the
number of units sold rose by 86%. This
is an excellent performance during a
difficult period for the property sector
in the Middle East as a whole.
The launch of Nest at Aljada, the
Middle East’s premier student housing
complex, which was also the first time
that investors were able to purchase
directly into a real estate asset class
here in the Gulf that is already well
developed elsewhere produced excel-
lent results for us. The handover of
our first homes, in Nasma Residences
in May, also helped spark even greater
interest in our first project, which is
now 95% sold out.
If 2019 was the year of sales, then
2020 is the year of delivery for Arada.
At both of our project sites, we are
working hard to complete key features
of each community. For example,
our focus right now is on putting the
finishing touches to the first phase of
Madar at Aljada, a new leisure and en-
tertainment district for the UAE. Also
at Aljada, we will also start the hando-
ver process for our first homes in the
megaproject later this year. We will
also start handing over homes in the
last two phases of Nasma Residences,
the community of almost 1,000 villas
and townhouses in Al Tay.
SUSTAINABLE AND ENERGY EFFICIENT
PROJECTS
We see the issues of smart technology
and sustainability has being entirely
complementary. Smart city solutions
tend to be sustainable by nature, and
sustainable elements in our projects are
often improved immeasurably through
the addition of smart technology.
This is especially true when it
comes to Aljada, where the size (24
million square feet) and the greenfield
nature of the plot make this an ideal
location to create a smart and sustain-
able city that can be a model for the
rest of the region. Our own research,
conducted before the launch of Al-
jada, showed us that there was clear
and consistent interest in the concept
of smart homes and smart commu-
nities. Among the merits that were
shared with us included: time saving,
better security and safety (especially
for children); efficiency; lower costs;
the opportunity to customise and the
ability to be eco-friendly.
Sustainability and the use of smart
technology form a major part of our
vision; we take them seriously not only
because it is good for the environment
and for our customers, but because
they are good for business too.
NASMA AND ALJADA PROJECT
Launched in 2017, Nasma Residences
became Sharjah’s fastest-selling real
estate project when its first phase sold
out in less than a month. Featuring
almost 1,000 townhouses and villas
spread over a 5 million square feet
area, Nasma Residences is a fully
comprehensive community, featur-
ing two retail centres, three parks,
a mosque and a GEMS international
school. The first homes were handed
over in May last year and we expect
to hand over all houses during the
course of this year.
With a sales value of AED24
billion, Aljada is Sharjah’s largest
mixed-use project, and one of the
most complex communities of this
type anywhere in the Gulf. Featuring
large residential components, as well
as a large leisure and entertainment
district designed by Zaha Hadid Ar-
chitects, Aljada also contains a busi-
ness park, three international schools,
four hotels and a hospital. Construc-
tion began in 2018 and is expected to
take a decade to complete.

PERFORMANCE IN 2019 AND
EXPECTATIONS FOR 2020
2019 was a year of first impressions
for us as we acquired 166 acres of
land in Cairo, saw the delivery of
over 151 units at the Alburouj project
in Egypt, and delivered Villa Diyafa
- a luxury hotel in Morocco - with 27
keys added as part of an expansion.
In the UAE, we launched SHA Emir-
ates at our second home destination,
AlJurf, and, driven by positive feed-
back in the market we expanded into
and additional phase of the project by
introducing new villa types.
For 2020, we have a couple of
large-scale projects in our pipeline;
we’ve started the year with the launch
of our new Rabat-based flagship
mixed-use development, Le Carrousel,
in Morocco. The first phase of this
project was sold out in December
and we’ve just started construction
with the building contract awarded to
SOGEA MAROC, which is a subsidiary
of French concessions and construc-
tion firm Vinci. We’ll also handover
our beachside community Nudra and
Abu Dhabi’s first urban park, Sheikha
Fatima Park. We’re expecting big
deliverables this year with over 1,000
units scheduled for delivery by the
end of 2021.
EXPO 2020
IMF projections suggest that Expo
2020 will contribute to economic
diversification across the UAE this
year, with potential to drive the fastest
growth in the UAE’s non-oil economy
sectors such as real estate, tourism,
hospitality etc. Our goals are closely
aligned with those of Expo 2020,
focused on innovative and sustainable
ways to create better communities.
Recently we announced our com-
mitment to the Guardians Initiative
at AlJurf with the Ministry of Climate
Change and Environment (MOC-CAE)
and Alliances for Global Sustainabil-
ity (AGS) - the initiative pledges to
safeguard and preserve Abu Dhabi’s
diverse heritage, nature, wildlife and
marine environments.
Undeniably, this year’s Expo is a
key part of how the UAE is position-
ing itself for 2020 and beyond. These
two factors are also central pillars
in the development of all IMKAN
products, and we are expecting to see
increased interest as the spirit of Expo
takes hold later this year.
SUSTAINABLE AND ENERGY EFFICIENT
PROJECTS
Both topics are instrumental to our
research at IMKAN - sustainability
and energy efficiency. With that being
said, not only do we consider the
need for planning safe and secure
spaces but also keep in mind the
preservation of the local environment,
landscapes and ecosystems surround-
ing our projects.
On a large scale, we have devel-
oped a corporate sustainability strategy
aligned with UN Sustainable Develop-
ment Goals which is already imple-
mented within our projects. Makers
District is a perfect example in terms
of design and operation. Our shad-
ing strategy for buildings and public
areas will reduce the heat island effect
and reduce energy consumption and
increase outdoor thermal comfort. Our
goal is to preserve and integrate the
surrounding environment, landscapes
and ecosystems into our develop-
ments, rather than disrupt them.
PROJECTS
At IMKAN, we have created a diverse
portfolio of projects; we have two
flagship developments in the UAE;
AlJurf - fully integrated second home
destination along the Sahel Al Ema-
rat (Riviera of the UAE) - and Makers
District located on Reem Island which
is home to the district’s first mixed-
use development, Pixel. We also have
Nudra, a luxury beachside community,
and Sheikha Fatima Park, Abu Dhabi’s
first urban park that seeks to enhance
community interactions. In addition to
these, we also have the Alburouj devel-
opments in Cairo and the Le Carrousel
and Villa Diyafa projects in Morocco.
TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION
We are dedicated to upholding the
latest technological and innovational
advancements across all our develop-
ments. In line with our placemak-
ing theme, we apply state-of-the-art
computational fluid analysis, to
assess the thermal comfort within our
developments and develop adequate
mitigation measure and strategies. We
support cross-sectoral innovation by
merging technologies – for example,
combining satellite remote sending
and AI in order to reduce the water
used in our developments, improve
the project sustainability, and overall,
contribute to the national sustainabil-
ity strategy.

SPECIAL FEATURE | DEVELOPERS YOU SHOULD KNOW
2019 PERFORMANCE
While 2019 was a difficult year for all
developers, 81% of our 54 ongoing
projects are sold as of Q3 2019. Prices
are bottoming out, making it an excel-
lent time to purchase property in the
emirate. Our focus is now on delivering
on our promises – the swift construc-
tion and completion of our immacu-
lately designed projects, which are all
in Dubai’s most strategic locations, is
our top priority, and is what increases
our top and bottom lines. With a high
pre-sales figure, Azizi Developments
is very profitable by merely delivering
units – this is what we will focus on.
This year alone, in 2020, we are
completing more than 15 buildings. We
have approximately 12,000 units to de-
liver, a substantial chunk of which will
be completed in 2020. We’ve already
finalised Samia in January.
EXPO 2020 BOOM
To play our part in the prepara-
tions and onset of Expo 2020, we
are developing a large concentration
of projects with direct metro and
highway access to the site, which
will continue to be a vibrant hub of
culture and leisure even after the
event. Moreover, we will further
build on our short-term home rental
concept through which we manage
and service our customers’ owned
apartments for them, and may convert
some of our properties into hotel
units to cater to the surge in tour-
ism. We are also sponsoring the Solar
Decathlon Middle East, a competition
hosted in the Mohammed bin Rashid
Al Maktoum Solar Park in alignment
with – and for the entire duration of –
Expo 2020, through our sponsorship
of Team Tawazun.
PROJECTS
RIVIERA
Riviera, a stylish waterfront-lifestyle
destination located in the heart of Mo-
hammed bin Rashid City, is planned
to comprise 71 mid-rise buildings
with over 16,000 residences that are
conveniently located in the midst of
all the business and leisure hubs of
the city. Phase 1 of Riviera is now
55% complete. 95% of it is already
sold out.
MINA
Mina is also host to a dedicated
retail precinct, covered parking, and
concierge service, while offering easy
access to the Palm Monorail, Dubai
Tram, and Dubai Metro, as well as to
a variety of hotels and other retail and
leisure attractions in its immediate
vicinity. The 178-unit development,
which comprises 120 one-bedroom
apartments, 54 two-bedroom resi-
dences and four spacious penthouses
spread across a total gross floor area
of over 22,991 square metres, is due
to be completed this year.
AL FURJAN
We have set foot in Al Furjan with
our philosophy of ‘customers first’ in
mind. We have already completed 13
projects in Al Furjan, with Samia be-
ing the most recent to be inaugurated
in January 2020, and have another 4
developments to be finalised in this
highly sought-after community this
year, as well as another 2 projects to
be completed in the coming years.

velopment in in Dubai Marina. Spread
over 31 floors and 400 residential
units, it has a built-up area of almost
500,000 square feet.
SUSTAINABILITY
In line with the UAE government’s grow
ing focus on sustainability and energy
conservation, Select Group has progres
sively introduced measures to improve
efficiency in all upcoming developments.
Some of these focus on indoor environ
mental quality, decreased moisture pen
etration, recycling initiatives and sensor
triggered systems to ensure significant
savings for residents.
PROJECTS
We are excited as Jumeirah Living Marina
Gate nears completion in the next three
to four months. This exceptional devel
opment features 104 serviced apartments,
389 private residences, 15 villas and has a
gross development value of AED 1.6 bil
lion with a BUA of 1,292,800 square feet.
As far as upcoming plans are concerned,
significant landbank has been acquired for
a mega new development in a prime wa

315,000 square meters, the masterplan for the
mixed-use development, incorporates both
high and low-rise residential, office, retail,
leisure and hospitality use, interconnected by
public open space and amenities which will
create a strong sense of community across
the neighbourhood. Extensive concept and
design works are currently ongoing.

two projects, Creek Vistas Reserve
and One Park Avenue, which gained
positive traction from the market. We
have also witnessed strong international
interests, with the number of Chinese
buyers growing by 100 per cent in Q1
2019 compared to Q1 2018.
Our outlook for 2020 is positive, as
we anticipate strong resurgence in the
real estate market, with an expected
handover of 900 units. We are set-
ting our sights on advancing Sobha
Hartland, and all the projects within the
master development, while maintaining
the highest quality standards and timely
project delivery.
SUSTAINABLE AND EFFICIENT ENERGY
PROJECTS
As we are making a conscious effort
to support a cleaner, safer and smarter
future, it is important that developers
draft a clear roadmap which takes into
account elements that promote sustain-
ability across the project’s lifecycle.
At Sobha Realty we are committed
to planning, constructing, and manag-
ing communities that conform to global
sustainability guidelines. With this
vision in mind, we implement innova-
tive solutions in our projects to ensure
the ultimate living experience for our
residents. At Sobha Hartland, we have
ensured the usage of only the most
energy efficient and long-lasting light
fixtures available in the market, which
are LED fixtures. We also use advanced
energy efficient VRF AC technology and
customised safe and energy efficient so-
lar hot water system. The development
is distinguished by its serene vibe, with
30 per cent of the total land area set
to encompass a dedicated green cover
and open spaces with more than 8000
trees being planted in the development.
SOBHA HARTLAND
Sobha Realty is currently developing
Sobha Hartland, which addresses the
forecasted demand for luxury residen-
tial properties in Dubai - a market rap-
idly gaining a reputation for generating
unmatched returns for investors.
Launched in 2014, Sobha Hartland
is an eight million sq. ft luxury free-
hold master development situated in
Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum
City, overlooking Downtown Dubai.
Key projects within the community
include Greens, Creek Vistas, Creek
Vistas Reservé, Gardenia Villas, Gar-
den Houses, One Park Avenue and
Forest Villas. The community offers
its residents the convenience of two
international schools, as well as a
selection of retail and F&B amenities,
and a boardwalk along the canal.

Kasun Illankoon caught up with Greg Ward, Managing Director, Transguard Group, to discuss
their new catering business, Taste of Home
Transguard Group, the country’s trust-
ed name in business support services,
has officially marked the opening of
its catering company, Taste of Home.
The newest division of the Group was
established in 2019 to fulfil a need –
to provide site-based employees with
delicious and healthy meals at an af-
fordable price. In order to offer a true
“taste of home,” the catering company
sought out chefs from the very regions
for which they cook: North and South
India, Pakistan, the Middle East, Africa,
the Philippines and Europe.
Led by an experienced Western and
Asian food management team, Taste
of Home’s dedicated chefs grew up
eating the food they now cook for oth-
ers, ensuring an element of authentic-
ity and distinction to the company’s
offering.
“Transguard Group is one of the
nation’s largest employers, and as a
proudly employee-centric organisation,
our priority is to ensure the best pos-
sible quality of life for our workforce.
In order to see that through, we have
several open communication lines to
receive feedback from employees,
both digital and in-accommodation,
and a regular request had been to seek
out a catering service that offered bet-
ter quality, and essentially, a “taste of
home”. Being that Transguard Group
is a business services provider, and
after much research, there seemed to
be this gap in the market, we decided
to whole-heartedly take on the respon-
sibility ourselves. It proved be the per-
fect solution internally, and once we
fine-tuned the facility for greater mass
production, we opened for business.”
said Greg Ward, Managing Director of
Transguard Group.
The company currently has the

bespoke catering packages for events
of all sizes. Furthermore, Taste of
Home has created a line of traditional
and ethnic snack foods for retail sale
currently successfully piloted at Trans-
guard’s dedicated, in-accommodation
convenience store, T-Mart.
“We’ve already landed significant
contracts in aviation, construction,
hospitality and retail, in addition to
taking on a number of event catering
projects,” Greg commented.
“As with everything Transguard does,
we hope that Taste of Home would
promote greater levels of well-being
for site-based employees, and ideally,
become the preferred workforce caterer
across the UAE,” Greg concluded.
capacity to produce over 80,000 meals
every day out of its 3,500m2 purpose-
built facility in Dubai Investment Park.
The Taste of Home HACCP (Hazard
Analysis and Critical Control Point)-
approved facility in DIP features four
dedicated cold stores for vegetables,
poultry, meat and fish, and four allo-
cated preparation areas for each. Greg
points out that Transguard have taken
the right steps to ensure that their
food is prepared in a healthy and safe
environtment:
“There are also designated national-
ity kitchens, all run by state-of-the-art
Saffron Catering Management Soft-
ware, which includes traffic light nutri-
tional information, calorie scores and
allergen data, for nutritionally balanced
recipes and portion sizes. Additionally,
kitchen staff adhere to a meticulous
hygiene process before entering the
food handling area of the facility,”
Greg further added.
Taste of Home’s operations is run
by a Lean Six Sigma-informed pro-
cess to guarantee complete efficien-
cy and minimum waste which isn’t
surprise considering Greg’s compe-
tence in all aspects of engineering,
quality, maintenance, security, con-
trol systems, personnel development
and strategy.

2019 PERFORMANCE
Powering Sustainable Transforma-
tion. Sustainability is a key element as
we continue on our pathway towards
transformation. The strategy that we
communicated at last year’s Capital
Markets Day has been well received by
all our stakeholders. We are now in full
implementation and are working hard
to transform our business in the long
term, while also delivering in the short
term in a volatile market environment.
Back in March at the BAUMA, CASE
Construction presented Project TETRA,
the first methane-powered wheel loader
concept in the world. So, in summary,
nearly all our acquisitions and invest-
ments in growth have the objective to
drive sustainability in all our end cus-
tomer business, be it by a better use of
resources, increase in productivity, or
by the reduction or avoidance of CO2.
Another important event in 2019 was
our recognition as Industry Leader in the
Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for the
ninth year in a row. This record is truly
impressive, and we can all be very proud
of this achievement and of the way we
continue to work in line with our purpose
of Powering Sustainable Transformation.
EXPECTATIONS FOR 2020
Looking ahead, let’s continue to live
up to our values and transform CNH
Industrial from a good to a great com-
pany. We continue to maintain that the
future is Sustainability driven and all
our product decisions are taken keep-
ing that in mind.

CUTTING COSTS
Crushing and screening on-site allow
the job to be self-reliant and to elimi-
nate hauling and dumping fees, even in
large quarries.
In Saudi Arabia, for example, a
BF135.8 Crusher bucket (that fits
excavators with an operating weight
above 94,800 lbs) and a MB-S18 Screen-
ing bucket (that fit excavators with an
operating weight between 44,100 and
77,100 lbs) processed inert material that
was then reutilized for the construction
of the Riyadh metro system. The same
company managed to extract the mate-
rial, screen it, crush it and put it to new
use. All of that in complete autonomy
while extensively cutting costs.
CREATING PROFIT FROM WASTE
MATERIAL
All inert material processed with an MB
Crusher unit is quality material: certified
and guaranteed to bring profit to the
operation.
As stated by a company in Northern
Italy, “With the MB Crusher bucket,
waste material is transformed from
“scrap” to CE certified material. We tore
down and built back up a number of
reinforced concrete pigsties with grated
flooring. We didn’t have any issues
with rebar; the MB Crusher bucket was
paired with an iron separator. The re-
sulting crushed material was perfect for
reuse right there on the job site.”
REDUCING WASTE
The “restored” crushed material can be
used as fill on the job site, new con-
struction and other projects. It can also
be sold on the market. Both solutions
bring tangible and measurable profit to
the operation.
MB CRUSHER
4 Simple methods to dispose of inert material with MB Crusher
This was accomplished by a Swiss
company, which used two MB Crusher
products - a crusher bucket and a
screening bucket - to create a complete
recycling operation: volume reduction,
material selection and reuse on-site.
“We wanted to find a system to lower
our costs, allow us to reutilize inert
material, and become more competitive
all the while supplying our customers
with the requested services. With MB,
we can lower labor expenses, machine
wear and consumption. All the while
producing impeccable recycled material
at a highly competitive price without in-
terrupting the operation. This wouldn’t
be possible with any other solution.”
INVESTING IN A LONG LASTING
PRODUCT
“In for the long haul” is also applicable
to MB products. It’s an investment with
a quick return, for a product that will
last a lifetime.
For the past ten year, a BF120.4
Crusher bucket has been crushing
dolomitic rock in a quarry 30 kilo-
meters away from Lubiana: the very
proud Slovenian company says that
the most demanding maintenance
intervention they have had, was
replacing the belts. This was done
on-site by the excavator operator,
without hiring a specialized work-
shop or mechanic.

with leaders in their respective fields,
we can provide every customer with
optimal production platforms, from
the smallest medical component to
the largest aerospace parts. At Kings-
bury, we believe expertise is the key
to excellence. Complex manufacturing
requirements demand an understand-

cash conservancy and ultimately returns
on investment. We fully understand
these factors because we have been
there ourselves. From our directors to
our sales managers and beyond, our
team were engineers first.
TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION
Additive Manufacturing (AM), also
referred to as 3D Printing* is a truly
transformational cross-sectoral technol-
ogy that is having a disruptive impact
on design, manufacturing, company
location and business models. It is set
to revolutionise businesses globally by
providing a radically new method of
production that enables new and better
designs to be realised at lower cost
with enhanced productivity and greater
sustainability. It will also transform
supply chains and the way businesses
operates resulting in completely new
business models. AM is a method of
making production parts and products
directly from design data, building
accurate components by adding layers
of material to obtain the final shape
with minimal waste and no expensive
dedicated tooling. It permits radical
product re-design and creates new
material properties. It is a lead technol-

In 2020, our vision is to continue to
support our clients by providing the
highest performing tower cranes with
superior technical support. In addition,
we are looking at more geographic
expansion and rental partners who can
support us locally in new markets. At
NFT, we pride ourselves with the ability
that we can deliver tower cranes and
hoists to any country and immediately.
We want to emphasize this strategy
even more this year.
NFT CRANES
Nagham Al Zahlawi, Deputy General Manager, N.F.T Specialized in Tower Cranes
L.L.C, give us an overview of what 2020 is going to look like for the company.
PRODUCTS
As you know NFT is the number one dealer
for Potain worldwide so our latest product
innovation follows that of the manufacturer.
Potain is introducing the hydraulic MRH 175
at Conexpo and we have already bought a
few for Europe and the UK. We also bought
many MD 809, which answers the strong
demand for bigger topless cranes. As for
NFT, we are working on several projects
to develop our asset management solution
since we have now relocated our head
office to the yard. Our 300,000 square meter
yard is already home to our 2000 used and
new tower cranes, 500 hoists and 35,000
spare parts elements. We have also broken
grounds for building our reconditioning facil-
ity for refurbishing used cranes which aims
to be complete by Q3 2020.
CHALLENGES
We are waiting on several mega projects
to be awarded in the GCC and worldwide.
The world’s geo-political and economic
instabilities continue to be challenging this
year but we remain optimistic.

We showcased a complete line of our
new Genie Xtra Capacity booms from
40 feet to 135 feet last year at ARA,
Bauma and other tradeshows globally,
showing our customers that Genie
is leading the industry with product
innovations.
While it’s cool to have the latest and
greatest gadgets on a machine, we
at Genie thoroughly analyse the cost
associated with new technology and
whether it positively — or negatively
—impacts our rental customers’ bottom
line and our operators’ productivity. We
don’t innovate for the sake of innova-
tion; we innovate to build businesses
that are successful.
We launched the Genie Lift Connect
telematics solution at ARA that converts
data into actionable information for our
customers, helping them to increase
their ROI on Genie equipment. Telemat-
ics is now available in the United Arab
Emirates and Saudi Arabia in our Middle
East region, with the other neighbouring
countries to soon follow.
An example of “purposeful innova-
tion” is the Genie Z®-60 FE articulated
boom, which features our “Fuel Elec-
tric” (FE) hybrid system that provides
several significant advancements over
other hybrid technologies. This new
design, also introduced recently on the
Genie Z-45 FE boom, includes a new
drive system, increased performance
and unprecedented applications flex-
ibility. This delivers improved ROIC,
since there is a negligible cost differ-
ence between the FE model diesel/
hydraulic units, while offering similar
performance.
These booms’ simple AC direct
drive system is 50% more efficient
than DC electric-over-hydraulic drives
TEREX AWP
Sharbel Kordahi – Sales Director MESART, Managing Director Terex Equipment ME
to maximize battery life. Service
requirements and operating costs
are reduced, since the number of
hydraulic valves, hoses and fittings
are lower, and there are no brushes to
replace or commutators to service.
Additionally, the Genie FE hybrid
system addresses inefficiencies in
the hydraulic lift, so it requires only
60 to 70% of the energy required by
diesel-over-hydraulic units. That’s why
Genie FE units are powered by a much
smaller mechanical engine that does
not require EGR, SCR or DPF aftertreat-
ment to meet emissions standards. The
Genie FE models can operate about a
week on its small fuel tank.
And, Genie FE units can provide
your rental company with significantly
higher application utilization because
they can be operated in “Hybrid” mode
for outdoor rough terrain applications
without concern of full battery dis-
charge; they also have “DC” mode for
zero-emissions operation, allowing the
units to be used indoors.
We also unveiled a new generation
of S series telescopic boom lifts glob-
ally, which are available for delivery to
the Middle East starting June. The new
machines are “right-sized for complet-
ing work-at-height applications, such
as general construction, maintenance,
inspection and painting tasks”. The new
Genie S-60 J telescopic boom offers
“the essential performance that opera-
tors need to get work done at height
using a jibbed boom with an unrestrict-
ed platform capacity of 300kg, an 1.8m
jib, a low 7,550kg operating weight,
and compact chassis design offering a
working height of 20.5m, a horizontal
reach of 12.3m and 56.4cm of ground

OUTLOOK FOR MAN IN 2020
According to The World Bank, glob-
al economic growth is forecast to
edge up to 2.5% in 2020 as invest-
ment and trade gradually recover
from last year’s significant weak-
ness. However, downward risks
such as re-escalation of trade ten-
sions and trade policy uncertainty;
a sharper-than expected downturn
in major economies; and financial
tumult in emerging market and
developing economies would per-
sist. Specifically, key economies in
Central Europe are expected to slow
down as fiscal support declines.
On the positive side, in 2020 eco-
nomic growth is expected in the Latin
American region to rise to 1.8%; the
Middle East & North Africa region is
projected to grow to 2.4%; and the
Sub-Saharan Africa region is expected
to pick up to 2.9%.
We do see an opportunity for us
to perform better and we will work
towards further strengthening MAN’s
business throughout our Sales Area.
NEW GENERATION
MAN will be conducting the global
launch of its new truck generation.
The new truck sets standards for
usability and connectivity. The new
truck is not just a truck, but rather
an integrated transport solution that
makes work easier for the driver, more
efficient and more comfortable. The
vehicle will impress both transport
companies and drivers.
While the introduction of the new
truck generation in the Middle East re-
gion is a given, we have not yet taken
a decision on the timeline. MAN will
MAN TRUCKS
Jörg Mommertz, Senior Vice President, Head of Sales Area Middle East, Africa &
Latin America and Managing Director, MAN Truck & Bus Middle East FZE
continue to offer the current TG range
and aftersales solutions till then.
INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY
As part of the TRATON Group, MAN is
taking active steps in these areas. We
are working on electric vehicles (van,
bus, and truck), autonomous driving,
fleet management and digitalisation.
On the e-vehicles front, MAN Truck
& Bus was one of the first European
commercial vehicle manufacturers
to successfully put e-mobility on the
road together with its customers. MAN
followed this up with a small produc-
tion run of the MAN TGM 26.360 E LL
distribution truck in December 2019 at
the Steyr plant in Austria.
The new MAN eTGE van is already
being used by two major logistic
companies in France by DHL Express
France & Geodis and in Austria by
Quehenberger Logistics, a transport and
logistics company.
We have also received our first elec-
tric city bus order from the city of Ham-
burg, Germany. The fully electric Lion’s
City E will delivered in the second half
of 2020.
The question of how used batteries
from electric vehicles can be used after
their first life in the vehicle is being ex-
plored by MAN Truck & Bus, Verkehrs-
betriebe Hamburg-Holstein (VHH) and
the Volkswagen Group in a ground-
breaking pilot project. One objective
of the project is to develop a flexible
battery storage concept which allows
for the replacement of batteries.
The scope of work in innovation
& new technology is vast and MAN
continues to make efforts and offers to
all its customers business solutions like
energy management, consulting.

New Quester was developed with the
Middle East in mind, so it is no surprise
that it is already proving popular with
businesses across the region. This is
evidenced by a noticeable trend last
year of companies entering into major
fleet deals with UD Trucks, where
the primary driver was New Quester.
Certainly, since the introduction of New
Quester and the 40 Ton and 8x4 12
CBM, we have been able to penetrate
new segments that were previously
dominated by European manufacturers.
Particularly noteworthy is the extremely
positive feedback we have received
from customers regarding the new
automated transmission ESCOT.
The key for us is to develop trucks
that allow our customers to address the
most important industry challenges they
face today and help them to stay ahead
of the competition. And from a Middle
UD TRUCKS
Mourad Hedna, UD Trucks Middle East President, tells us about the
New Quester Trucks
East perspective, this means tackling
the real issues they face on the ground
in this region. So dependability and
reliability fuel efficiency, productivity,
connectivity, and supporting and devel-
oping drivers are top priorities for fleets
and transport companies here.
This is why both the New Quester
and the Croner were specifically engi-
neered for tough markets like Middle
East market. In the case of the New
Quester, this heavy-duty truck intro-
duces a range of enhancements to help
customers across the region to boost
their bottom line, including key features
such as ESCOT automated manual
transmission, engines with higher
horsepower, comfortable cab and
user-friendly UD Telematics to deliver
greater fuel efficiency, productivity,
driver efficiency, safety and uptime.
Driver safety and training is integral to
our customer service offering. While our
products are very much designed with
the safety of their occupants, and other
road users and pedestrians in mind,
from our regional offices we are focused
on enhancing the drive user experience.
From Dubai we run an advanced Com-
petence Development Centre offering a
full suite of Driver Training courses that
cover both product specific modules,
road safety sessions and other driver
related topics. In addition, UD Trucks
offers a plethora of online content in the
form of video and audio to ensure the
competence and confidence of driv-
ers when it comes to daily inspection
and safety features. As an example, UD
Trucks donated three heavy duty trucks
to a driving school in Ethiopia, as part
of a joint initiative by UD Trucks and
the Volvo Group, with a key focus on
reducing the number of road accidents

Targets for Scania Middle East for 2020
are to grow in all markets, enter new
segments and extend our product and
service offering in the region. We aim
to take the lead in sustainability by
providing our customers not just with
the product but complete sustainable
transport solutions.
NEW TRUCK GENERATION
The New Truck Generation is a result
of ten years of development work and
SCANIA
investments of over two billion Euros,
Scania has made significant improve-
ments in this and some of them are
highlighted below-
• New design and shape of the front and
chassis for improved aerodynamics
• Powertrain updates resulting in
exceptional fuel efficiency and
driving performance
• Extended storage options
• Enhanced driver’s seat adjust-
ment options
• Maintenance based on your
operation, increased uptime and
profitability
• Unique safety features such as roll-
over curtain side airbags, Stability
• Control, Active Emergency Brak-
ing (AEB), Electronic Braking
System (EBS),
• Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and
Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
• More space behind the seats for
wider beds

to ferry commuters in the morning,
deliver goods during the day and col-
lect refuse at night. The Scania AXL is a
fully autonomous cabless concept truck
built for mining and construction sites.
With the Scania AXL and NXT, we are
taking significant step towards the smart
transport system of the future, where
self-driving will play a natural part.
TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION
Every Scania we’ve put on the road
in the last decade has been full of
smart technology, advanced sensors
and wireless connectivity – which
means that we have hundreds and
thousands of constantly connected
vehicles and engines in use all over the
world today. The main reason to all of
this is Data, there is no better way to
improve something than analysing it
real world usage. With the Scania Fleet
Management system, you can get both
information and insights – a lot more of
it than our free monitoring reports. All
constantly updated and available 24/7.
Safety is also another feature we
heavily invested into, with the 360
degree HD view camera system you
can park, load and manoeuvre through
traffic much safer. The Adaptive Cruise
control helps keep a safe distance from
surrounding vehicle when cruising. This
has been improved to handle speeds
all the way down to stationary, mak-
ing cruising safer and easier even in
traffic jams. The side detection feature
increases safety by detecting objects in
blind spots. It consists of 2 systems –
Vulnerable Road User Collision Warning
and Blind Spot Warning.
CHALLENGES
Most markets in the Gulf are still
suffering due to the heavy fall in the
construction sector which has affected
all suppliers of heavy duty trucks. Also
Oil & Gas segments are still under pres-
sure. We hope to see improvements
in the next year within these sectors
as they represent a major share of the
heavy truck sales.
• The Scania Opticruise automated
gearboxes now feature a layshaft
brake for even smoother and much
faster gear shifting, actually twice
as fast when shifting up. And as
option we also have a version with
a clutch pedal that can be used on
demand when you really need it, for
example when manoeuvring in tight
environments.
• We have also improved our road
handling and the brake performance
by 5%
We offer the widest range of alterna-
tive fuels in the industry – Hybrid,
Bioethanol, Natural gas (CNG/LNG),
Hydrogenated vegetable oil, Biogas and
Biodiesel. Which one of them is the
best alternative for you depends on the
character of your business.
Apart from the New Truck Genera-
tion, in 2019 Scania introduced its first
prototype Autonomous Bus and truck
– the Scania NXT and AXL. The Scania
NXT is the new battery electric self-
driving urban concept vehicle designed

launch that will show how Volvo CE
turns words into actions. The project
is dedicated to combining the power
of Volvo people, products, and
partners to help address global chal-
lenges and build a brighter tomorrow
for people around the globe.
Likewise, construction fans can
also give something back in advance
of the show by helping Volvo CE
pick a worthy cause to benefit from
the auction of the limited edition
EC200E Volvo excavator. By taking
part in an online poll, participants
can choose which non-profit will
receive proceeds from the machine’s
sale at the Ritchie Bros. auction in
Orlando, Florida, in February. The
excavator, which will make its final
public appearance at the Volvo CE
ConExpo stand, has been touring
North America over the past six
months to celebrate the 10th season
of Gold Rush, a TV series focusing
on the challenges facing teams of
miners digging for gold in the US
and Canada.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
I find cultural differences fascinating,
especially how they influence team
dynamics and marketing campaigns.
I recently began covering the role
of internal communications lead
for EMEA, which is exposing me to
different cultures and communica-
tion styles. So, this year, I’m keen to
develop a greater understanding of
the communication preferences and
decision-making processes typical of
the countries in which AECOM oper-
ates in Europe as I feel this will help
me to create content that is relevant
and engaging.
AECOM AS MARKET LEADERS
Positioning starts with understanding
our markets, clients and competitive
environment. From there we develop
marketing strategies that support
growth by building awareness in the
market that inspires our clients and
drives preference for AECOM over the
competition.
At AECOM the marketing and
communications team sits within the
wider Strategy & Growth group that
also comprises work winning and
creative. This structure allows us to
provide relevant and consistent brand
experiences throughout all client-fac-
ing activities — from prepositioning
all the way through to bidding and
client care.
ATTRIBUTES
I’m good at joining the dots, which I
attribute to my broad marketing and
communications background. Having
a strong understanding of the various
disciplines, such as PR, branding,
digital, events and communications,
allows me to develop impactful
multi-channel campaigns that reach
and inspire target audiences, inter-
nally and externally. Most recently,
this approach was applied to a
recruitment campaign to support our
growing business in Saudi Arabia. To
promote the opportunities and as-
sociated employee value proposition,
we developed a standout campaign
incorporating videos, imagery, bro-
chures and blogs that were promoted
via a variety of channels and targeted
at the individuals we were seeking
to attract.
IMPORTANCE OF TEAMWORK
Strong teamwork is a necessity when
delivering marketing strategies. It’s es-
sential that all team members under-
stand the objectives and the elements
they are responsible for delivering.
Our marketing and communications
team is very diverse, with several cultures
and beliefs represented. This diversity
brings multiple perspectives and experi-
ences, which when combined with indi-
vidual specialist expertise, is very power-
ful. It allows us to be more creative and
reflective of the communities in which
we live and the clients we serve.
Faye Bastow, Director, Marketing & Communications, MEA Strategy & Growth at AECOM, tells us
about her role and how she is helping contribute to AECOM’s success
