// construction business news me // NOVEMBER 2018 8 Thank you! F irst of all I would like to extend a big thanks to all the professionals from the construction industry for attend- ing the third annual Construction Innova- tion Awards 2018 and making it a huge success. More than 300 people attended the gala night, where winners and runner-ups across 23 categories were commemorated for their achievements. I would also like to thank all the spon- sors who has supported us throughout the event and helped the team attain greater heights. Finally I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the campaign team for their tireless efforts in promoting the awards in the market. CBNME received an overwhelming number of nominations for the awards this year and hopefully we will emerge bigger and better in 2019. Recent reports say that construction companies can look forward to a cautious recovery in the market following a challeng- ing period of subdued performance. Long- term positive factors such as demographic demand drivers and government support combined with a modest rise in oil prices remain key drivers for capital spend and will remain the catalyst for spend on capital and infrastructure projects. The industry has been awaiting the award of a range of projects identified by each GCC country as part of their defined long- term vision, with transport, social infra- structure and tourism programs among the key priorities. Keeping in line, Dubai would be gear- ing up for the end of the year, which will also see the largest construction event tak- ing place in November 2018. The Big 5 will take place from November 26-29, 2018 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, which will see more than 2,600 exhibitors from 64 countries participating. The biggest names in the global construction industry, includ- ing international, regional and local brands will showcase their products and services. The CBNME team will be present at the exhibition with full force and would like to connect with all the industry professionals to listen to what they have to say! editor’s note Paromita Dey Editor paromita@bncpublishing.net @paromitadey1 linkedin.com/in/paromita-dey S U B S C R I B E subscriptions@bncpublishing.net CEO Wissam Younane wissam@bncpublishing.net Director Rabih Najm rabih@bncpublishing.net Group Sales Director Joaquim D'Costa jo@bncpublishing.net +971 50 440 2706 Sales Manager Vishvanath Shetty vish@bncpublishing.net +971 52 119 3077 Business Development Director Rabih Naderi rabih.naderi@bncpublishing.net +966 50 328 9818 Editor Paromita Dey paromita@bncpublishing.net Art Director Aaron Sutton aaron@bncpublishing.net Marketing Executive Mark Anthony Monzon mark@bncpublishing.net Photography Farooq Salik Naveed Ahmad PO Box 502511 Dubai, United Arab Emirates P +971 4 4200 506 | F +971 4 4200 196 For all commercial enquiries related to Construction Business News ME contact sales@bncpublishing.net T +971 50 440 2706 All rights reserved © 2015. // construction business news me // NOVEMBER 2018 18 // Talking point Fischer MEA talks about the growing brand awareness in the region and owes its success to innovation Innovation and beyond T he manufacturers are the backbone and support of any successful industry and it is no different with the construction and the anchor industry. But, there is a clear differentiation between how suc- cessful a supplier can be based on how they operate. History has proven time and again that only those who have dedicated themselves to advancing ahead of cur- rent market trends through constant research, development and through a customer-focused approach, were able to climb to the top of the competition and anchor themselves there. But these companies also face the risk of fall- ing the moment they stop progressing through innovation. fischer, as one the leading manufactur- ers worldwide in the anchor and fixing technology, strongly believes in this philosophy and owes its success to their dedicated research and development of over 70 years and with over 46 subsid- iaries, they have ensured a strong global footprint over the years. fischer Middle East and Africa, a 2018 Superbrand which was also recently awarded the “Supplier of the Year 2018” at the Construction Innovation Awards in Dubai, is considered one of the company’s fastest growing subsidiaries worldwide. This is the result of fischer MEA’s years of dedication towards its clients and projects, be it the iconic Burj Khalifa and the Burj Al Arab or the cur- rently ongoing projects such as the Expo 2020, the Riyadh Metro, or the Sheikh Khalifa Hospital in Fujairah. The German giant has time and again delivered technical perfection by providing unique technical proposals to match even the most complex require- ments along with a wide range of other services. Generally, generating and delivering such unique and efficient designs with short lead times can be excruciatingly challenging and the Middle East being the fast-paced development hub it is, it’s quite normal for such demands. But even under such conditions, fischer MEA leads the pack and this is can only be credited to innovation through their “FIXPERIENCE” software. The innovative design tool “FIXPE- RIENCE” is considered fischer’s most state-of-the-art design and calculation software. One of the main challenges faced by the structural engineers is having software that can solve their complex design cases in a simple yet ef- ficient fashion with reliability and safety in consideration. This is where FIXPERI- ENCE plays a critical role through its highly user-friendly interface, by assist- ing engineers in addressing challenging cases be it non-typical base plate shapes, structural re-bar connections or architec- tural hand-rail connections. FIXPERIENCE Design Suite Modules: Cfix – Design of Fixings in Concrete & Masonry Rebarfix – Design of Structural Rebar Connections Installfix – Design of supports for MEP applications Railfix – Design Calculations of Hand Railing in Concrete Mortarfix – Estimation tool for chemical anchors Woodfix – Design support for fixings in wood. This highly modular software, which is available to everyone for download on fischer’s website, can be used for a variety of applications and through guideline considerations of various inter- national standards, the software fulfills all the conditions for usage globally. This allows for engineers worldwide to use the software to efficiently plan and calculate complete projects or just indi- vidual cost optimized applications. With such highly innovative tools and a dedicated team of engineers to sup- port the entire region, fischer continues to thrive in maintaining their strong pres- ence and looks forward to continuing as such in the coming years.

construction business news me // NOVEMBER 2018 // www.cbnme.com 23 Panel: Public-private partnerships in construction Public-Private-Partnerships (PPPs) stand amongst the main levers being considered in the Gulf as a means to boost private sector contribution to the economy and to offload some of the financing burdens from the govern- ment onto private investors. Regulatory framework for the UAE’s PPP law was set in 2015, but according to our speak- ers, “flurry of activity is yet to occur.” Our panellists for this session includ- ed Helena De Flaviis, senior director at Khatib & Alami; Andrew Greaves, partner and head of GCC at Addleshaw Goddard; and Bill Smith, partner, Pinsent Masons. The session was moderated by David Clifton, director – strategy & growth for construction services, AECOM ME. The course of the panel saw the speakers share their experiences with regards to PPP. Both Greaves and Smith familiarised the audience with the legal aspects of PPP, and how these could benefit all the parties involved in the longer run. Despite the potential it carries, however, PPP has yet to gain significant acceptance and traction in the GCC. Greaves mentioned that younger, more ‘entrepreneurial’ con- tractors are keen to be involved in PPP projects. Smith stressed that even the existing interest in PPP projects is more so strictly ‘hard infrastructure’ focussed, even though plenty of opportunities lay in social infrastructure development contracts for schools, communities, and hospitals. He also adds that often many contracts begin as PPP projects but then dissolve into the standard en- gineering, procurement, and construc- tion (EPC) model. Flaviis believes that early project reg- ulation, simplification of rules, and a transparent pipeline [of projects] could help the PPP trend go a long way. When Clifton inquired if there was a lack of experience [for PPP] in the region, Smith agreed and highlighted that often the lack of educated higher personnel meant that many PPP op- portunities were turned away simply because they “did not understand it.” A common consensus was reached: PPP is the answer to long-term infrastructure plans, and more so to form a pool of knowledge for all partners on the project. Further amendments to the existing laws, for instance improving ownership protocols for international private investors, could draw more attention to this form of contracts.

// construction business news me // NOVEMBER 2018 24 // CIF 2018 Presentation: Innovation in the Global Mobility Industry and Implications for the GCC Vitali Bielski, senior consultant, Mobility Practice, Frost & Sullivan, held a pre- sentation session on the global mobility scenario and its impact on the way business is done in the GCC. Bielski’s session highlighted that rapid urbanisation in the world’s major cities have led to severe traffic issues, and insufficient public transport solu- tions do nothing to curb the issue. The answer is simple: the global trans- portation market needs new type of mobility services. “Moving towards a city-centric ap- proach is one way to address urban issues,” said Bielski. Investments in integrated mobility, data monetisation, demand responsive services, and last mile logistics have been seen across the world. On-demand solutions have been launched all over the globe, including in Dubai, where RTA introduced trials for bus-on-demand services. Bielski believes we will witness changes in the future ownership and usership structures when it comes to an autonomous ecosystem, where users will access multiple structures – for example, full ownership, shared licenses, fleet services, etc—based on their day to day needs and travel scenarios. “Valuations of ridehailing companies have soared. Lyft and Uber have valued at $11bn and $68bn respectively,” high- lighted Bielski, supporting his point of the shift in public mobility approach. In terms of impact on the construc- tion industry, Bielski mentioned that innovation in logistics and drone delivery, autonomous technology and connected vehicles, chassis sensors that can identify road infrastructure damage, could all bolster the industry’s fast-growing expansion.

// construction business news me // NOVEMBER 2018 26 // CIF 2018 Panel: Impact of Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data on projects Data driven projects are on the rise around the world and in the region. The construction industry is notorious when it comes to productivity, with many projects running overtime and over budget. The industry is slower than others at adapting to change, such as that brought about by tech- nology. However, IoT and Big Data can help the industry improve on its pitfalls and reduce projects risks in the longer run. Our panellists for this session included Sherief Elabd, director of Industry Strategy and Business Devel- opment, Oracle; Paul Wallett, regional director, Trimble Solutions; Christo- pher Wodzicki, engineering services director, BuroHappold; and Ali Khan, manager –Project Management Office, ROAMWORKS. The session was mod- erated by Lee Clark. Clark opened the session by asking the speakers what questions they com- monly received when trying to explain terms like IoT and Big Data and how this trend could help the industry. Elabd mentioned that explaining the fundamental nature of IoT was vital—how it could connect every worker, equipment, and software on a construction site and transform the way work is done. Wallett stressed that it wasn’t just important to adopt IoT—it was also vital to manage all the data that comes from it, stating: “We’re going through a disruptive phase in the con- struction industry.” Wodzicki emphasised that it was of- ten difficult to explain how exactly IoT fit in with the construction industry’s grand plan of things. He said: “IoT is not something for just at a construction phase, but even at an operational and management stage.” ROAMWORKS provides asset intel- ligence solutions, and Khan explained that IoT can help the industry analyse factors like fuel consumption, material requirements, and capital investments. All the speakers agreed that while the benefits were plenty, the tech- nology and its data come with a fair share of challenges. The fundamental issue stems from not being able to make accurate use of the data. More so, many companies are still intimi- dated by IoT and there are many false concepts about the data being too expensive or too difficult to work with. As Elabd put it: “IoT is not an overnight game-changer. It’s still in a ‘baby stage’, but it’s picking up. There needs to be a cultural change [to adopt IoT].”
