hen the calendar turns
to October, I think of the
changing weather, new col-
lections at every store, and,
of course, our much-anticipated Creative 30
Powerlist. So, when we first started working
on the powerlist for design a few years ago, we
were thinking about how we would position
this feature, what kind of reaction we would
get, and whether we would be able to do this
year after year. It turned out to be a landmark
feature for our magazine, giving us a distinct
recognition in addition to saluting the year's
top designers and architects. So, once again,
we celebrate the true gems of this region who
are reshaping the landscape beyond words
and our dreams. A must-read!
Our October cover story is unique in that
it demonstrates how two people who are not
only life partners, but also partners at work
are changing the dynamics of the industry.
Meet MuseDesign's Managing Partner
Michael Dudnyk and Partner and Lead
Designer Stanislava Rudas Dudnyk as they
explain their success story built on passion,
creativity, and exceptional teamwork. They
are real and candid, and their fortune is shin-
ing brightly on them as they work with the
region's largest clients and are going places.
It was a pleasure to interview them and share
their story.
Allow the excitement to build even further,
as the Design Middle East Awards are just a
few days away, and we are thrilled by your
nominations. We are inundated with your

in the Real Estate sector. As we commence

Ahmad Shibel, CEO of Taraf said: “We’re thrilled
to be starting the construction of Luce, Taraf’s
first iconic property. With this groundbreaking,
we are moving forward with our commitment to
shape the future of luxury living by redefining
the standards of residential properties. We’re
proud to be working with partners, which are

The successful launch of Luce has captivated
the interest of buyers seeking a unique living
experience. The development offers a wide range

all thoughtfully designed to provide residents
with the ultimate in comfort and sophistication.
Luce offers private beach access to pristine

lines, and takes its cues from the fluidity within
both Dubai’s desert and seascapes.

Standard possesses particular
expertise in the project business,
including for the public sector,
the healthcare sector and for
developers of large residential,

In addition, alongside a broad
range of ceramic bathroom

Ideal Standard comes with an
established fittings business,
which generated more than a
third of its revenue last financial
year.
Jan Peter Tewes, Ideal Standard
CEO, says “Villeroy & Boch and
Ideal Standard complement each
other, in terms of products but
also in terms of brands, and will
gain mutual benefit from their
different sales channels. Both
companies will play a key role in
charting the future course of the
industry. We look forward to this
development!”
In addition to the strategic fit,
Frank Göring points to the cultural
similarities between Villeroy &
Boch and Ideal Standard: “We are
characterised by strong brands
steeped in tradition and share
similar values. These include a
pronounced service orientation,
a flair for good design and a
constant striving for innovation.
We are delighted that the
employees of Ideal Standard
will become part of our global

of the transaction. Our clients

New expertise opens up
prospects for growth
With this merger, Villeroy &
Boch is not only elevating its
bathrooms business to a new
level in terms of volume, but is
also gaining access to significant
additional growth potential. Ideal
Standard’s manufacturing base in
the fittings business, expertise in
the project business and strong
market positions in the UK, MENA

improved market penetration

global growth potential, the integrated
company will, after completion of the

are being sold by corporations under
the management of Anchorage Capital

The revenue of the Villeroy & Boch
Bathroom & Wellness Division will
double to ¤ 1.4 billion as a result of
the merger. Including the Dining &
Lifestyle business, this represents
an increase to over 1.7 billion euros
(around ¤ 995 million in the 2022

tradition of

A unique
space dedicated to Islamic-inspired artworks,
the gallery presents a captivating collection,
from leading 19th and 20th century glass and
crystal master craftsmen.
Commenting on the launch, Founder of
Makma Art Gallery, Alia Sefrioui, said: “Makma
Art Gallery is the product of years of planning
and dreaming to curate an experience that
reimagines the beauty of glass artistry in a
contemporary context. Inspired by my own
upbringing in a family of art collectors, this
passion project is now a reality, bringing a
thoughtfully curated collection of timeless
pieces from around the world, to the UAE.”
Makma Art Gallery opens a contemporary space for everlasting glass art
Crafted from 100% natural and long-lasting materials, glass
and crystal are known for their durability and timelessness.
Our collection is as diverse as the history of glass and crystal
manufacturing that spans the centuries. Makma’s exhibitions
shine a spotlight on European master craftsmen who
reinterpreted traditional Islamic glass art, bridging the gap
between the past and present. We aspire to transform Makma
Art Gallery into a hub for artistic and cultural exchange that
blurs the lines between tradition and modernity, to connect us
all through a shared identity.”
At Makma Art Gallery, one-of-a-kind pieces from Europe’s,
and particularly Bohemia’s, leading glass and crystal houses are
presented through a fresh and modern lens. Their exceptional
design, proportions and meticulously executed gilding can
transform contemporary homes into spaces of effortless luxury
and refinement.
The gallery’s inaugural collection ‘The Mystical Art of Glass’
displays a curated selection of Mosque lamps and beautifully
crafted pieces by French glassmaker Philippe-Joseph Brocard,
along with pieces by Josef and Ludwig Lobmeyr, founders of
renowned Viennese glass company J. & L. Lobmeyr.
Part of a new wave of 19th century glass makers, Brocard
and the Lobmeyrs recaptured ancient methods to create
outstanding glass pieces, inspired by Islamic decorative arts.
Their vivid interpretation of ancient Persian and Ottoman glass
is known as the ‘Mamluk Revival’.
On display until the end of December 2023, ‘The Mystical Art
of Glass’ will be part of a series of exhibitions through which
Makma Art Gallery presents a broad view of Islamic-inspired art
and its global influences. The gallery collections will highlight
the synergies between East and West, bringing rare artisanal
glass art and Bohemia crystal, known for its stunning palette of
colours, to the region.

esthetics have a lot of power
in the ever-changing world
of design. However, aesthetic
trends come and go quickly,
leaving behind designs that quickly
become obsolete. This paradox arises
from the transitory nature of trends,
which may captivate momentarily but
often lack enduring influence. This
highlights an important point: when
design is exclusively focused on looks,
it might lack depth, eventually failing
to leave a significant, long-lasting
impression on people. This gives rise
to an aesthetic paradox because while
these designs may be initially visually
appealing, they frequently lack a deeper
or enduring significance for those who
engage with them.

he diver-
sity of our
intercon-

world ne-
cessitates
a shift in
design
philoso-
phy. Each visual element carries
cultural baggage, from the colors
we choose to the symbols we
employ. Ignoring these nuances
can result in designs that misin-
terpret or overlook the emotions,
values, and beliefs of various au-
diences. In today's global society,
the need for cultural understand-
ing is not a mere luxury—it's
a requirement for effective
communication. Designers must
recognise that resonating deeply
with diverse audiences goes
beyond visual appeal; it requires
an understanding of the cultural
tapestry that shapes their per-
ceptions.
For instance, in the Middle
East, funerals are traditionally
associated with the colour black,
symbolising mourning and loss.
However, when Ahmed Gaballah,
CEO of SOKNA, approached
us, he sought to challenge this
convention. He didn't want his
audience to perceive funerals as
depressing or synonymous with
death itself. In this region, while
black may dominate funeral
attire, religious and cultural
aspects of spirituality often
incorporate lighter colors like
white, light blues, and beige. Rec-
ognising this, we took a holistic
approach, aligning SOKNA with
the spiritual aspect of the funeral
experience and their philosophy:
"We take care of the body, and
you take care of the mind/spirit."
This approach allows people
the time and space to grieve
and find closure without being
overwhelmed by logistical details
such as booking funerals, open-
ing crypts, or arranging transpor-
tation for family members, thus
reshaping the narrative around
funeral experiences in the region.
The solution to this problem is
to incorporate cultural sensi-
tivity into the core of design ap-
proach. Designers with a strong
sense of cultural significance
can create graphics that tran-
scend passing trends and instead
develop genuine connections.
This entails going beyond surface
aesthetics and beginning on a
cultural discovery adventure. In
practice, this means designers
should actively consider the
cultural context in which their
designs will be experienced.
They can do this by studying the
significance of colours in various
cultures, understanding the
emotional impact of symbols,
and deciphering the layers of
meaning within cultural expres-
sions. By weaving these cultural
insights into their design process,
designers can create meaningful
and impactful designs that reso-
nate with diverse audiences. This
approach not only adds depth
to their work but also ensures
that the visual language they use
speaks directly to the hearts and
SOKNA branding by pew. design bureau
minds of those they seek to engage.
In an era where design functions as
a universal language, cultural sen-
sitivity is not just an add-on—it's a
fundamental aspect of design lit-
eracy. It's the tool that transforms
designs from being momentary
trends to timeless pieces that en-
dure. This transformation ensures
that designs don't just catch the eye
but also touch the heart, fostering
lasting connections and leaving
a profound impact. As renowned
industrial designer Raymond
Loewy put it, "Most Advanced yet
Acceptable" (MAYA) is the key.
To sell a new idea, you must give
it some familiarity, and to sell a
familiar idea, it needs to be surpris-
ing in some way. A prime example
is Airbnb, initially dubbed "the
eBay for homes," or more recently,
Adobe Firefly being referred to as
"ChatGPT but for images." This
demonstrates that an understand-
ing of the market and the balance
between familiarity and innovation
is essential for design to truly reso-
nate with audiences.
By recognising the symbiotic
relationship between cultural
relevance and aesthetics, designers
can transcend the limitations of
trends and craft designs that speak
a universal language. Cultural
sensitivity provides a road to au-
thenticity, where designs resonate
deeply with varied audiences and
transcend time. It's a journey that
elevates design from a merely
visual experience to a profound
and meaningful dialogue between
designers and the world they wish
to influence.

Tilal Al Ghaf by Majid Al Futtaim. Installation for that
project began this year.
This year we will complete installation for over 100
kitchens at the Qaryat Al Hidd Development at Saadiyat
Island and over 1,100 kitchens with Meydan for two
different developments. One of those developments is the
Canal Front Residences overlooking the beautiful Dubai
Water Canal. It is poised to be a highly-sought after
community. Together with Nolte Küchen, we’ve created
amazing designs for each of these projects.
When working with developers, how do you support them?
We support developers with these large projects from the
conception stage all the way through to installation.
We don’t just sell kitchens, wardrobes and vanities in
bulk, we work together with developers and designers
taking on a consultant role helping them select the
perfect designs, storage solutions, finishes and product
ranges to make special and perfect selections.
From our offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we have a
team of 120 people who work collectively to make large
projects happen and work with our in-house designers to
also make each retail customer's experience seamless.
What are some emerging trends in the industry?
We have been fortunate to work with great designers both
in our own showrooms and for development projects.
This has given us a front seat to what designers are
looking for and what is enticing our retail customers.
Open floor plan designs, neutral tones and kitchens with
multi-functional elements are continued trends.
However, this year we’ve also seen a lot more color be
incorporated into home design spaces than in the last few
years. Colors like green, gold and red are used for partial
designs or accent pieces in a fresh new way that brightens
up the home and creates character. >>>

What has been challenging for you this year?
We all know that business in the UAE has exploded in
the last few years. This has brought new competitors
to the market which is great because that means
consumers have a lot of options to choose from.
However, it can be confusing for consumers to navigate
the differences in price, product quality, selection
range, manufacturing location, design possibilities and
installation timelines.
We believe our premium product quality, competitive
pricing and excellent service and installation puts us
ahead of competitors. Our kitchen and home appliance
brands are premium quality, made in Europe with high
standards for sustainability and production.
Since UTC is the exclusive distributor of Nolte Küchen in the
UAE, tell us more about the most recent Nolte sub-brand,
nolteneo.
nolteneo is Nolte Küchen’s luxury range offering
highest quality materials, fronts, finishes and design
possibilities. For customers who want a more bespoke
aesthetic and want to take modern design to the next
level, nolteneo is the right choice. With options like
mirrored door fronts and interior lighting in each
drawer box, nolteneo gives customers the German
quality product that Nolte is known for without
compromising on unique elements.
What brand-new offerings can we anticipate from UTC in
the wardrobes segment and product category?
We’re excited to announce our partnership with
Italian wardrobe brand Giessegi. This partnership
will enable us to create beautiful custom-made
wardrobe solutions for projects.
Like the other brands we work with, Giessegi is
a European company making products with the
highest standards for quality and sustainability.
We will be able to offer versatile solutions and
a wide range of finishes and components for
wardrobes and walk-in wardrobes. It is an exciting
expansion for us to offer this new category for
projects and with a product and brand that is truly a
luxury offering.
In what direction do you see the industry moving?
Where do you see Universal Trading Company in the next
few years?
We know that the industry in the UAE will continue
to grow. As more people move to the region, the need
for home design solutions and home appliances with
exceptional quality will be in high demand.
Developers continue to build massive mega
developments across the UAE. We know that they
understand the need for premium kitchens and
appliances while also working with companies who
are able to help them be cost-efficient. We’re proud
that we’ve been the leading company to work with
developers in this way and we’re looking forward to
bigger projects in the coming years.

MuseDesign is in the heart of Du-

community of designers, artists,
and creative professions. d3 is the
Middle East's design industry hub,
featuring cutting-edge facilities and
resources for designers to present
their work and collaborate with
others in the sector. One of the
primary advantages of being in d3
for Michael and Stanislava is having
access to cutting-edge technology

has world-class facilities such as

Michael and Stanisla-

projects in addition to small and
mid-sized ones, with a focus on full
reconstruction and construction
projects, and they are demonstrat-

knowledge like no other.
Michael explains: "Our focus on
full reconstruction and construction
projects in specific areas of Dubai,
such as Jumeirah Bay Island, La
Mer South, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai
Hills, District 1 and Emirates Hills,
has allowed us to take on larger
and more complex projects, which
has been an exciting challenge for
our team. We feel that by accepting
these types of projects, we will be
able to demonstrate our skill in gen-
erating distinctive and new designs,
architectural solutions, and luxury
living. We are constantly on the
lookout for new methods to push
the boundaries of what is possible
in interior design and offer imagina-
tive and bold solutions to projects."
MuseDesign collaborates with
investors that are interested in
purchasing recently renovated pre-
mium residences that offer value for
consumers seeking a lavish lifestyle.
This has contributed to MuseDe-
sign's rapid and broad popularity.
"Collaborating with clients who
are interested in buying upscale
residences that have recently been
renovated has been a key factor in
our success," Michael exclaims.
“
We are able to demonstrate
our skills in designing luxuri-

develop our brand as a leader in the
luxury interior design market and
work on some genuinely distinctive
and interesting projects including
Atlantis The Royal Residences, Ad-

Bluewaters residences,” he shares.
Michael enjoys working in this
region, and his passion for grandeur
is shared by his clients. "Designing

range of emotions in us. The region
is famed for its splendour and
grandeur, and many of our designs
reflect this. We are inspired by the
region's rich cultural legacy as well
as its modern and forward-think-

frequently integrate traditional
Middle Eastern architecture and
design features, as well as modern

ichael Magill is the Cre-
ative Director of RSP, a
diverse, forward-think-

design group, and his
ambition for the com-

to create meaningful
spaces and experiences.
Despite his enormous responsibilities in manag-
ing the Dubai studio, Michael is deeply involved in
the everyday craft of design. He guides a team of
incredibly experienced architects and master plan-
ners through every stage of their creative journey,
continually challenging and developing their design
instincts while ensuring that every voice is heard.
Under Michael's guidance, the team has embarked
on a wide range of project types, a hotel in the
vernacular style of 18th century Saudi Arabia to a
floating gallery in the virtual world Decentraland.
Michael's vision for RSP in 2023, was to secure
projects that push the boundaries of design innova-
tion resulting in elevating the global portfolio of the
esteemed company.

A major achievement for RSP was
winning the design competition securing
the role of design architect for the Armani
Hotel and Luxury Branded Residences,
spanning a vast 35,000 square meters
in Diriyah Gate, Saudi Arabia. Michael's
design harmoniously marries traditional
and contemporary elements, showcasing
the richness of Najdi design while fea-
turing the brand's iconic and world-re-
nowned design style. Currently nearing
completion, another prestigious project,
the BAPS Hindu Mandir, spanning an
expansive 55,000 square meters in Abu
Dhabi, draws its inspiration from the UAE's
desert dunes and the profound cultural
tenets of Hinduism. Michael and his team
have meticulously crafted an iconic mon-
olithic oasis, inviting all to experience its
unique and memorable atmosphere.
Another project which will be completed
by the end of this year is the high-end
luxury residences at the Palm called El-
lington Beach House. RSP, led by Michael,
provided architecture and interior design
services for this prestigious project.
RSP has also ventured into new territory
through the designing a master plan
vision for a E-Sports Arena and entertain-
ment district. The project will introduce
a cyber district that will include an edu-
cation hub with virtual and augmented
learning, and specialised courses in game
development, programming, computer
graphics and animation.
Adding to the roster of achievements is
the recent win led by Michael—the Nobu
Hotel & Branded Residences on Saadiyat
Island in Abu Dhabi, marking the prestig-
ious brand's debut in the region.
To meet client demand, Michael extend-
ed the Dubai studio by hiring a master
plan team, which has subsequently
collaborated on projects with Aldar Prop-
erties, contributing to large-scale resi-
dential developments in the UAE. Beyond
the local landscape, RSP has also secured
new projects with Roshn, a prominent real
estate developer based in Saudi Arabia.
Aligned with Michael's versatile design
philosophy, as a Singaporean firm, RSP
places sustainability at the forefront
of all projects from their very inception.
Given the pressing urgency of climate
issues, Michael trains the team to remain
steadfast in their commitment to being a
proactive and creative force in enhancing
and safeguarding our environment.
Embracing RSP's commitment to ex-
tending the lifecycle of buildings, Michael
took on the challenge of designing a
zero-carbon 'healing' retreat nestled in
a remote location in UAE. This visionary
project encompasses the compo-
nents of a wellness resort, focusing on
long-term well-being, and incorporates
sustainable practices. With a selection of
eco-conscious materials and innovative
construction and operational systems,
including the elimination of single-use
plastics, provision of refillable water
stations, electric car-charging stations,
and partnerships with local farmers, this
resort epitomizes a sustainable lifestyle
with zero waste.
Michael, who embraces RSP's 67-year
legacy and wealth of experience, believes
it is our collective responsibility to nurture
the next generation of budding designers,
empowering them to actively champion
sustainability and advance technolo-
gy with a keen understanding of the
ever-evolving role of design in today's
world.

n his role as Regional Design Director
at Meinhardt Middle East, Mohamed
Ali exemplifies a holistic approach to
design leadership that spans a wide
range of key design elements.
Central to his mission is the en-
hancement of design quality, the or-
chestration of seamless coordination,
and the cultivation of a distinctive and signature
design culture. His overarching objective is to
uncover and amplify added values that lead to
disruptive ideas, transcending the confines of
traditional design paradigms. Through his efforts,
he aims to improve not just the use of buildings,
but also their inherent efficiency and enduring
elegance, all while retaining and emphasising
their essentially human essence.
Mohamed is a visionary figurehead in Mein-
hardt Middle East's wide landscape, overseeing
critical parts of the organisation's creative and
architectural ambitions. His influence extends
across several fields, including master planning,
interior design, urban planning, and architecture.
His appointment in 2022, was not merely a rou-
tine succession, but rather a strategic maneuver
aimed at augmenting the firm's architectural
design capabilities. This augmentation serves as
a valuable and strategic addition to Meinhardt's
already formidable presence in the Middle East,
a presence that has been consistently impactful
since its inception in 1997. Through this strategic
positioning, Mohamed seeks to further reinforce
Meinhardt's standing as a significant engineer-
ing player in the region.
At the heart of Mohamed’s vision is the
establishment of a pervasive quality culture
that serves as the guiding light for Meinhardt's
design strategy. This culture encompasses
the ideals of mindful growth and the pursuit
of prestigious projects in collaboration with
high-end developers who share in the vision
of exceptional design. The essence of this
approach is not only to design structures but to
craft experiences and spaces that transcend
the ordinary, enhancing the very fabric of the
built environment.
An early manifestation of Mohamed's design
prowess was evident in his role in conceiving
and designing Meinhardt's new office located
in Dubai Media City. This ambitious project was
conceived to accommodate the burgeoning
team of over 300 architects and engineers,
charting a course for the firm's future growth.

This space's design exemplifies his dedica-
tion to creating surroundings that stimulate
creativity and cooperation, all while demon-
strating the firm's creative capabilities.
Beyond the confines of the office, the de-
partment, under Mohamed's leadership, has
embarked on an exciting journey, actively
bidding on and executing an array of signifi-
cant projects with esteemed Middle Eastern
clients. Notable among these is the ongoing
development of the largest mall in Makkah,
a venture undertaken in collaboration with
Hamat and Umm al-Qura. These landmark
projects underscore the department's unwa-
vering dedication to delivering excellence in
design and execution, ultimately contributing
to the transformation of the region's archi-
tectural landscape.
In recognising the pivotal role that technol-
ogy plays in driving exponential growth, Ali is
spearheading the establishment of a ded-
icated Digital Delivery unit. This innovative
unit serves as a conduit for expanding the
horizons of design possibilities, harnessing
the power of data-driven techniques such
as generative design. Moreover, it will play
a pivotal role in the development of Digital
Twins and exploring new frontiers within
the metaverse. Through these pioneer-
ing efforts, Mohamed and his team are
actively shaping the future of design,
positioning Meinhardt Middle East at the
forefront of technological innovation in
the architectural realm.
It is important to note that while
embracing cutting-edge technology
and innovation, Mohamed Ali remains
steadfast in preserving the classical
architectural workflows that have
been the hallmark of the world's great
masters. This blend of tradition and
modernity forms the bedrock of the de-
partment's methodology and approach.
It is a harmonious fusion, blending the
timeless wisdom of classical architec-
tural principles with the latest advance-
ments in building services and structural
engineering. This synthesis results in the
delivery of a comprehensive, high-end
product that ushers in a new chapter for
Meinhardt, one that is more design-ori-
ented and replete with value-added
services that cater to the evolving
needs of clients and the demands of the
modern world.
In summation, Mohamed’s stewardship
at Meinhardt Middle East represents a
remarkable fusion of vision, innovation,
and dedication. His leadership is charac-
terized by an unwavering commitment to
design excellence, the seamless integra-
tion of groundbreaking technology, and
the harmonious synthesis of tradition
and modernity. Through his endeavours,
he is not merely shaping buildings; he is
shaping experiences, environments, and
the very future of architecture itself. In
doing so, he paves the way for Meinhardt
Middle East to ascend to new heights,
reaffirming its role as a pioneering force
in the architectural landscape of the
Middle East and beyond.

South East Asia where his passion for design excellence
flourished at HOK Asia Pacific in Hong Kong. He soon developed a
keen interest for large scaled projects. Following his seven-year
experience in Hong-Kong and Japan, Martin worked in Singapore
for years as senior design architect with award-winning Kerry Hill
Architects on a number of high-end resorts in South East Asia. Mar-
tin then moved to Dubai in 2005, where under RMJM he famously
conceptualised one of Abu-Dhabi’s most striking icons, Capital Gate.
Martin co-founded the acclaimed firm U+A in 2007, and has been
the driving force behind the company’s tailored design approach.
Martin's work, with over 25 years of global experience, consistently
emphasises the relevance of context and
cultural uniqueness for each project. His archi-
tectural passion emerges from his long-time
fascination with "living structures" — creating
buildings that improve the everyday lives of
their inhabitants. He has always valued the
architect's position as a facilitator, understand-

runo Guelaff is a multi-disciplinary award-winning
architect whom is at the design helm of the BG Group
in Dubai, UAE. Bruno was born in New York City as a
Frenchman; after attending Lycée Français de New
York and earning a US bachelor's degree in sociology, he con-
tinued to pursue his interest. His specialisation was discovered
after four years of research at NYSID. Bruno was the first re-
cipient of the B.F. A. Travel Prize, which allowed him to travel the
world, stopping in 15 countries and over 22 cities, an experience
that strongly inspired his design flare. After working as a chief
designer at a major New York firm for several years, his path led
him back to Dubai in 2008, where he continues to develop his
craft at 'studio bruno guelaff' within the 'BG Group'.
Bruno has spent the last 15 years as the Design Director of the
award-winning boutique firm'studio bruno guelaff'. He has been
heavily involved in all parts of each project, including architec-
ture, master planning, interior design, landscape design, furniture
design, and branding. Bruno, as a multi-discipline doyen, ensures
that all design elements conclude in a comprehensive fluid
personalised project.
Over the years, Bruno felt there was something missing in
the equation of the typical project process from conception to
realisation. Within the construction process there was a lack
of fluidity of work ownership which goes into play when a mul-
titude of consultants are involved. The concept of master of all
trades needed to be extended to the execution of a project and
not only the conceptualisation.
BG Villas was created organically when Bruno Guélaff and
Khalid Kaluti's professional paths crossed in Dubai some years
ago. Both Bruno and Khalid quickly realised after being each
other’s clients that combining their award-winning specialties
could lead to something quite unique. The goal was to establish
a transparent and honest Design + Build construction company
that could provide not only the highest quality construction
services for residential villas, including pools and landscaping,
but also award-winning design services to provide its clients
with an unparalleled experience and end product.
Bruno speaks with passion about the process of design: “It
is my privilege to be able to design a true home for each of our
patrons, understand their cultural backgrounds, understand
the way they interact with their family members, the way they
interact with food, the way they interact with media and then
translate that onto paper into a fluid personalised architectural
layout representing the way they experience the world around
them.”
With a multitude of luxury Design + Build projects in full con-
struction spread all around the Dubai area from Dubai Hills to
Pearl Jumeirah the next big step in the BG adventure was brand-
ed boutique developments. Bruno anticipates the future unique
development projects that BG is spearheading with eagerness
and excitement, as he and his colleagues continue their drive to
break limits and create new standards for Design + Build.

ovind Shepley is the creative Director of TwentyOne06,
where he has created 11 great projects in the last year. He's
more than just a creative director; he's the driving force
behind making dreams a reality.
Govind's secret ingredient? It's not just his creative genius; it's also
his ability to incorporate statistics into the mix. He understands that
emotion and passion are at the heart of every design. So, equipped
with a data-driven strategy, he and his team go deep into study. The
end-result? Solutions that are not just visually appealing but also
make business sense.
But Govind's influence extends beyond design. He's like the compa-
ny's principles' defender, making harsh decisions and turning down in-
itiatives that don't suit the culture. It's not just about revenues for him;
it's about allowing the brand to soar without any needless baggage.
In terms of dedication, Govind is all about looking out for his squad.
He acts as a buffer against burnout and unrealistic deadlines, foster-
ing an environment in which passion thrives. Furthermore, he is always
on the client's side, ensuring that they receive a design staff that is
entirely devoted to their success.
In our relentless pursuit of excellence, we have successfully execut-
ed 16 projects throughout the year. Each project serves as a testa-
ment to our steadfast commitment to not only meet but consistently
surpass the expectations of our esteemed clients.
“Our unwavering dedication to excellence and commitment to deliv-
ering exceptional results have positioned us as preferred partners for
esteemed figures in the culinary world. We had the honour of working
together with famous chef Rief Othman to create three distinct dining
locations, where we not only developed their logo but also precisely
designed their interior themes, says Govind.
“Furthermore, our demonstrated expertise has garnered the atten-
tion of global industry giants, including Marriott, who have entrusted
us with the revitalisation of several of their legacy establishments.
This prestigious collaboration has further fortified our standing as a
highly sought-after design agency within the industry,” Govind adds.
The success of their endeavours has allowed them to grow their
outstanding crew. They have welcomed six new successful individuals
who bring to our organisation a lot of innovation and skill. Furthermore,
we are looking forward to the arrival of two more qualified experts
who will contribute considerably to TwentyOne06's continuous
growth and success.
Next year's plans are jam-packed with great potential for Twenty-
One06 and organisational growth. With our client portfolio quickly
expanding, we're poised to broaden our horizons and make a substan-
tial effect in a variety of global regions. They've successfully closed
contracts for various projects in Asia, the United Kingdom, and Saudi
Arabia, demonstrating our consistent advancement on the global
stage.
One particularly exciting endeavour on the horizon is our collabora-
tion with a well-established UK-based company with a 35-year track
record. They came to us because of our unrivalled work quality and
our distinct information and data design style. This collaboration is
more than just a collaboration; it is a portal to tremendous progress
and advancement.
Govind and his team's ultimate goal is to seamlessly combine the
assets of both companies, allowing them to develop a dominant
position in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia regions on behalf of their
renowned partner. The ambition of their united efforts spurs them
forward, convinced that by working together, they can make a lasting
impact on a global scale.
The observatory - Marriott; L'amie, a French Mediterranean restau-
rant; Pitfire Pizza; Nama Yoso, a Japanese dining concept; MTN office;
three high-end villas; and more are among their forthcoming projects.
At the heart of REIF'S DESIGN is the appealing live cooking
theatre, a mesmerising vision that immerses customers in the
intriguing realm of culinary artistry.

S
andra is a well-known British
architect and urbanist who has
lived and worked in the UAE for
nearly three decades. She leads
tangram architects’ MENA
region studio, described as “a practice
that pushes the boundaries of design, with
sustainability at its’ core”, and who were
recognised as the “Middle East Architec-
ture Firm of the Year 2019”, by Middle East
Economic Digest.
Sandra is a Fellow of the Royal Institute
of British Architects, the UK’s Academy of
Urbanism, and is the RIBA Regional Ambas-
sador for Sustainability, and was recently
recognised by the UAE Government for her
pioneering contribution towards sustaina-
bility and climate technology.
She first moved to the UAE to work on the
analysis, review, and development of the Al
Ain City master plan, which was the fastest
changing city in the Gulf in the mid 1990’s.
Living in this desert town sparked a lifelong
passion for expanding one's understanding
of desert urbanism and delivering region-
ally noteworthy projects that respect and
respond to local climatic, environmental,
cultural, social, and sustainability concerns.
Her subsequent project work spans
from the usage of traditional materials
and methods of construction in the
regeneration and development of the
historic Arts and Heritage Area of Sharjah,
following traditional coral stone and timber
construction techniques and practices.
She then went on to deliver the first green-
roofed government building in Dubai as
part of the development and introduction of
the Green Building Regulations and Specifica-
tions across the Emirate, for which tangram
realised 11 social infrastructure projects in
seven years. This scheme commenced Dubai
Municipality’s conducting technical studies for
green roofs system for buildings in Dubai and
in 2009 announced their long-term strategy
for sustainable design in the Emirate.
Sandra is currently designing for health
reform in North Africa with a new Women and
Children's Cancer Care Hospital that incorpo-
rates nature-based designs into the building,
forming an essential extension to the patient
and staff spaces that promote the connection
of humans with nature.
Located on the outskirts of the forest of Zer-
alda, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, which
inspired and gave guidance for landscaping
and the usage of natural materials throughout.
An atrium is carved out creating a main
entrance hall that brings in natural light to the
public waiting spaces below, this is supple-
ment internally by a circadian lighting system
in the depths of the nuclear medicine depart-
ment, to deliver “cool” blue light during the day
that transitions to “warm,” low-intensity light
in the evening reinforcing the body’s natural
rhythms to promote health and well-being.
Innovatively, paediatric isolation pods are
embedded into this landscape with pano-
ramic views, in a patient-centric approach, to
allow those unable to leave their rooms to be
cocooned by nature, promoting recovery for
immunosuppressed children who often face
lengthy and isolated in-patient stays. Integrat-
ing the natural world into the recovery spaces
to enhance and promote healing, internal en-
vironmental comfort, and well-being through a
design which helps shape all user experiences
and patient outcomes. This scheme was
recently exhibited by the UK’s Architects for
Health (AfH) to showcase what makes a good
health building with new health thinking and
pushes the boundaries of healthcare design.
Currently, Sandra is overseeing the devel-
opment of tangram’s latest studio, tangram-
META a technology start-up, formed to deliver
designs for an “Hospital of the Future” pro-
gramme that harnesses the potential of digital
technologies and Augmented Intelligence to
create virtual reality spaces.

ago, stepping into the role of managing director.
In his new role Jason supports the Chairman, Brian Johnson, heading the
development of the company, setting growth strategies and leading the team
whilst managing a busy workload within the practice.
Jason and the team have recently acquired a number of new projects,
specifically residential developments across the UAE as well as a new hotel
in Dubai and a new island development in Abu Dhabi. In addition, the team
have handed over two new school projects this summer – the new building
at Dubai College and the Arcadia Global School in Al Furjan - and are set to

Fabidha's journey has been an upward curve towards
achievement and growth, with learning at all times. Her
firm, Design Matter, tries to push the boundaries and thrive
as a fresh interior design practice under her direction.
Larger projects enter the firm's portfolio as evidence of its
expansion.
With her keen design eye and attention to detail here is how
Fabidha has made an impact in the past year. She has led 20 health-
care projects in the last few years, including clinics, wellness cen-
tres, and health-retail venues. Three in the last year. Under her direc-
tion, the firm is now completing the design of a 190,300-square-foot
hospital - Medcare Royal Hospital, Ghusais - in conjunction with the
Bangalore-based architecture firm ANA.
When it comes to residential towers, Design Matter has designed
residential tower complexes and one large-scale residential devel-
opment this year, with a total of 436 floors for highly diversified local
real-estate company, GJ Real Estate. It introduced a global and con-
temporary appeal into its brand to differentiate it from the typical
residential towers of Ajman.
Several abandoned homes on the Palm Jumeirah and Emirates
Hills have also been successfully converted into revenue-gener-
ating properties by Design Matter. Unfortunately, these villas were
plagued by several design flaws, rendering them unusable for
several years. Design Matter repositioned the properties in order to
appeal to the lively Dubai crowd.

Nikki BISIKER
N
ikki Bisiker is the owner and
lead creative director of Nikki
Bisiker Interior Design. Nikki's
background is self-taught
through passion, flair, and hands-on
expertise gained over 30 years..
Nikki's grandparents on her father's side
collected antiques, vintage gowns, gloves,
hats, and fashions. And it was at this point
that she became interested in materials,
textures, and fabrics such as glassware,
gorgeous wood finishes, silverware,
silks, chiffons, satins, and various lighting
techniques. Nikki didn't realise how her
gorgeous, one-of-a-kind surroundings
would affect her until much later.
Her early schooling was strong in
languages and business studies, which
led her to a career in the restaurant and
hotel industry. She was able to merge her
passions for design, business, and people
interaction in stunning luxury settings.
She developed and operated a 160-seat
restaurant and cocktail bar in Lymington
on the British south coast, then a 45-
room sporting hotel in the Welsh hills and
a luxury barn conversion in Shropshire. It
was the 1980s, and she was just out of
her 20s!
Exposure to foreign languages also
created a fascination in cultures and
traditions far and wide. Whilst her stable
upbringing in a happy, close-knit family
contributed to her sense of how a calm,
ordered and structured household can
powerfully influence design concepts
Both these forces– travel and the psy-
chology of the home – combined later
to shape her unique design philosophy
around the artistry and psychology of
the home.
In the 1990’s her business thrived with
private commission to design luxury
homes in Lyon France and super-yachts
in Monaco. A much-loved Harley-David-
son motor-bike being one of her preferred
modes of transport to take her from
client to client!
In 2004, she brought her work together
under the brand name Nikki B Signature
Interiors. And moved the business to
Dubai where property development was
booming. She was tasked with renovat-
ing an antique farmhouse in Al Ain, an
interior oasis city near the border with
Oman. She then developed luxurious
mansions in Dubai.
Design projects took her all over the
Middle East as well as back to Europe and
Russia. The company turned into an LLC
the following year and started to create a
strong team.
With a kaleidoscopic career that has
taken around the world across four dec-
ades she has a work ethos that knows no
boundaries.
And the secret to her resilience: “Pa-
tience, a sense of humour, co-ordination,
time and project management and em-
pathy with the client. A genuine passion
for the creative arts, with a strong team
fostering a work environment that sees
long standing employees enjoying the en-
vironment and work process,” she says.

rand creative worked its
magic once again on its most
recent project, Minimalist,
which inaugurated its main
retail store in Dubai's City
Centre Mirdif. In August 2023,
Minimalist, a brainchild of
Ahmad Yousuf, emerged
as a demure luxury fragrance and accessories
destination, redirecting the design industry with
its unwavering commitment to the beauty of
simplicity. This experiential concept resonated
with the idea that genuine beauty lies in the
most unassuming colours, curves, and textures,
aiming to evoke positive emotions by drawing
inspiration from the natural world.
The Brand Creative
team worked extremely
closely with Minimalist’s
in-house designers to
blend Middle-Eastern-
inspired heritage with
luxurious materials
and intricate details to
ensure each timepiece
radiated quality and
care.
The textures on the
walls and screens were
inspired by the tranquil
serenity of ocean
scenes, and the use of
strong blue accents
produced a stunning
contrast.

Minimalist Dubai was built on the essence of the sun's splendour,
the boundless reflections of the ocean, and the organic curves of
an unending horizon. Premium experiences were created here by
leaving ordinary distractions at the door, ushering in a new era of
shopping that embraced the art of minimalism.
Design concept
The goal of Minimalist was to create a shopping destination that
honoured the timeless attraction of well-designed timepieces,
jewellery, leather goods, and fragrances while establishing itself as
a premium yet approachable brand. The challenge was to develop
a concept that stood out in experience and brand positioning,
offering mood-enhancing products in a space that was timeless,
memorable, Instagram-worthy, and multi-sensory—a place that
radiated happiness and positivity.
Approach
The strategy approach taken by Brand Creative for Minimalist's
store design revolved around creating pleasant feelings by bor-
rowing inspiration from nature, including the ocean, sunlight, and
organic land curves. The minimalist design style was defined by
clean lines, neutral hues, and softly curved edges, with touches of
gold representing happiness and the warm warmth of a sunset.
Final execution
The store's bright, open, floor-to-ceiling glass entrance entices
the passersby with its play of light and luxury, drawing them into
a world of opulence. Inside, guests are welcomed by an island
display featuring bespoke jewellery selections, complimented by
blue suede seats held up by bronze legs. Above the island, floating
pearl-inspired lights add a whimsical element to the ambiance of
the space. We created symmetry with reflective surfaces >>>

Minimalist's mission was to design prod-

ism, focussing on what truly mattered in life.
The final launch marked a refined shift in
the retail luxury sector. The devotion of the
design to simplicity, quality, and positive ex-
periences is redefining luxury and making it
more accessible to individuals who appreci-

the development of this design culminated
in the formation of a philosophy and dedi-

in Minimalist introducing a new elegance in
retail luxury.
