A
nd thus, 2023 comes to an end! I'm taking
a trip down memory lane through this
year as I write this, but where do I even
begin? LNME Connect and the Logistics
and Transport Awards KSA are just two
industry-unifying projects that Logistics News ME
launched this year. We have also put much effort
into creating some exquisitely chosen editorial
content this year.
Still, I must say that this year has been very
remarkable for me. In addition to getting
to know a lot of wonderful, like-minded
people, I learned a lot. The best part is that it
has all helped me become better, wiser, and
more intelligent. Not to show off, but I can
really see how much I have changed from
the person I was, and my closest friends have
confirmed this as well, for which I am truly
grateful.
Closing in 2023, in 2024, I want to work
harder, interact with more intelligent people,
focus on improving myself as a person, and
explore new areas to broaden my actual
knowledge.
From a professional standpoint, this issue
is particularly noteworthy before we wrap
up the year since we have made an effort
to compile a list of some of the most
outstanding logistics leaders. Logistics News
ME will be prepared to welcome the new year
with higher calibre articles as we advance.
Beginning in February 2024 with the
Logistics & Transport Awards KSA, our first
blockbuster event in Saudi Arabia. Until then,
enjoy your reading, and I'll see you in 2024!

he national flag carriers
of the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia, Saudia and Riyadh
Air signed a Strategic
Cooperation Memorandum of
Understanding as part of an expansive
agreement to include codeshare flight,
signifying a significant milestone
moment of collaborative strength in
the KSA aviation ecosystem. The MOU
is the first considerable agreement
between the two airlines, and it is
set to lay the foundation for further
cooperation in the future.
Along with strengthening the broader
Saudi aviation ecosystem, the

he global logistics industry has experienced
exponential growth, and Dubai has become an
eminent part of it. Dubai’s meteoric prominence as a
global logistics hub stem from its strategic planning,
geographic advantage, and visionary leadership. Over
the past few decades, the city’s logistics sector has emerged
as a powerhouse, transforming Dubai from a small trading
port to one of the world’s most vital logistical and commercial
centres.
Several key influential factors have prompted Dubai’s
remarkable evolution into a thriving global logistics hub:
Geographical Location:
Dubai has proved to be an ideal place for trade relations. The
city, located in the centre of the world between the East and
the West, has played a pivotal role in its development as a
logistics hub. It is a gateway between Europe, Asia, and Africa,
making it an ideal transshipment point for orchestrating the
seamless flow of global trade and travel. Dubai has recognised
its advantageous geographical positioning and has adapted
accordingly. With Dubai International Airport and the newly
constructed Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), Dubai
has developed a rapid system that unites the world. Annually,
Dubai International Airport sees approximately 14 million

flights pass through its hub. The region’s
growth is exponential compared to its
origins just 30 years ago.
Infrastructure Development:
To propel the growth of the logistics
industry, Dubai has strategically invested
in state-of-the-art infrastructure,
including Jebel Ali Port, one of the
largest and busiest ports in the world.
The port’s efficiency and continued
expansion have contributed to Dubai’s
prowess in the global logistics industry.
Likewise, Dubai International Airport
and Al Maktoum International Airport
(DWC) are key air freight hubs
supporting a seamless flow of global
cargo movements. Undoubtedly, Dubai’s
growth over the last 30 years has been
nothing short of exceptional. Despite
rapid modernisation and innovation,
Dubai continues to instil its local
traditions and country crafts at the port
at Hamriya and the jetty–wooden dhows
continue to carry trade between the
neighbouring countries.
Free Trade Zones:
Dubai’s well-planned implementation
of free trade zones, such as Jebel
Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) and Dubai
Airport Free Zone (DAFZA), have
proven instrumental in attracting more
businesses by offering tax exemptions,
full ownership rights, and streamlined
custom processes. The zones create a
compelling pull to the region with their
easy accessibility and business-friendly
approach. Dubai has a portfolio of over
40 free zones, providing diverse options
for businesses to register in alignment
with their specific requirements.
Investment in Technology:
Dubai has emerged as a pioneer in
cutting-edge technologies within
logistics, incorporating advancements
such as artificial intelligence, blockchain,
and automation. This investment in
technology aims to enhance operational
efficiency, mitigate costs, and streamline
intricate logistical processes.
Government Initiatives:
Dubai’s government has impressively
fostered a holistic business ecosystem.
The government has orchestrated a
conducive business environment by
implementing policies supporting
trade, investment, and infrastructure
development. Key initiatives, such as
Dubai’s Vision 2021 and Vision 2030,
articulate strategic objectives to enhance
further the city’s position as a global
logistics hub. Dubai distinguishes
itself as a secure environment
and a harmonious melting pot,
accommodating over 200 nationalities
coexisting peacefully. Looking ahead to
the 2050 vision entails integrating Al
Maktoum International Airport into a
50-kilometre district, envisaging a self-
contained mini-city on its own.
Diversification of Economy:
Dubai’s leadership recognises the
importance of a diversified economy
beyond oil. With a focus on logistics,
trade, tourism, and finance, Dubai
works to build a knowledge-based
economy. With dedicated budgets to
expand these sectors, Dubai works
towards reducing dependence on oil
revenues.
Strategic Partnerships:
Dubai has actively pursued international
partnerships and collaborations
with renowned global companies to
strengthen its logistical capabilities
further. By forging international
relationships, Dubai supports its
knowledge-based economy. The
forthcoming COP28 initiative and
EXPO city development are expected
to welcome a notable influx of global
companies, encouraging businesses to
make Dubai their operational base.
These comprehensive factors have
synergistically converged to facilitate a
dynamic and thriving ecosystem, which
is integral to Dubai’s remarkable rise
as a global logistics hub. The city’s
strong commitment to innovation,
substantial investments in state-of-the-
art infrastructure, and the formulation
of business-friendly policies collectively
emphasize its significance as a pivotal
player in the global supply chain
network. Dubai’s persistent commitment
to expanding these essential elements
demonstrates its proactive approach to
adapting to the changing needs of the
modern global business environment,
securing its standing as a worldwide
leader in logistics.

ARE YOU READY FOR
DISRUPTION?
According to Rueben
Scriven, Research
Manager at Interact
Analysis, the warehouse
automation industry
structure is changing
T
he industry value chain is changing.
We’re seeing a shift away from highly
customized fixed automation solutions
to more modular, configurable, and
standardized systems, like AutoStore
and OPEX. This will have far reaching
implications on the industry’s value chain,
eroding margins for system integration and
solution design, while benefiting system OEMs.
During this insight, we’ll be discussing the
following topics:
> The current industry structure and how it
developed.
> The rise of more modular, plug-and-play
systems and the impact this will have on the
industry.
> How companies can position themselves to
capture the most value given the current industry
trends.
The Traditional Model to System Integration
There are several steps in the warehouse automation value
chain as depicted below. Most warehouse automation system
integrators cover the span from system OEM all the way to
after-market service (as depicted in the table below). One of
the reasons for this vertical integration is due to the high level
of commoditization of traditional fixed warehouse automation
hardware (e.g. shuttles, conveyors, sorters etc). A lack of
differentiation and a relatively slow pace of innovation has
shifted the buy-vs-build decision firmly to the ‘build’ side.
For example, Witron acquired FAS in 2005 in order to bring
OEM capabilities in-house. On the other hand, system OEMs,
struggling in a low margin business, developed integration
capabilities in the pursuit of higher margins. For example,
TGW – which was originally a system OEM, developed
integration capabilities. This led to the current state of the
industry where the bulk of revenues are generated from OEM
system integrators.
In recent years, we have seen several third-party system OEMs
enter the market, developing highly modular and standardized
solutions that tend to be based around robotics (as opposed to
traditional conveyance), such as Exotec, AutoStore, Dexterity,
and Berkshire Grey. This is shifting the buy-vs-build decision
for system integrators in favour of ‘buy’ due to the rapid rate
of innovation surrounding these technologies, coupled with

the lack of in-house robotic expertise.
Because the market is changing rapidly,
incumbent system integrators don’t
want to bet big on a single acquisition
target or look to develop technologies
in-house because end-customer
preferences may have shifted by that
time.
This leads to the growth of pure-
play system integrators, which focus
primarily on integrating hardware
from third-party system OEMs like
AutoStore and Exotec. For example, in
the top 10 system integrators in the US
last year (2022), nearly all OEM System
Integrators lost market share, while
the opposite was true for pure-play
system integrators. Even ‘conventional’
OEM System Integrators are starting to
partner with more system OEMs. For
example, Dematic – the quintessential
OEM System Integrator – partners with
AutoStore, Dexterity, and Quicktron.
The trend towards system integrators
partnering with system OEMs is on the
rise.
The novel systems developed by
AutoStore, Exotec, OPEX, and other
third-party system OEMs are highly
modular and configurable. This
contrasts with legacy equipment (often
conveyance-based), which tends to be
highly customized and bespoke for each
client. The shift from customized to
standardized is, in effect, shifting the
value creation from the build phase to
the design phase.
ARE YOU READY FOR DISRUPTION?

Interact Analysis
LOGISTICS NEWS ME | DECEMBER 2023 | 19
Page 20
The Value Chain is Shifting
Much of the value is created in the
integration/build phase because it’s
often highly customized and requires
extensive software and electrical and
mechanical engineering competencies to
build these systems. Without extensive
knowledge and skills, providing a
bespoke automation solution would be
challenging.
However, the relative ease with which
these novel third-party solutions can
be ‘connected’ together is lowering the
barrier to entry for system integrators,
which can potentially erode margins
for system integration over time.
Furthermore, companies like SVT
Robotics are accelerating this trend,
making it easier than ever to integrate
third-party solutions using simple
and intuitive user interfaces. As we
mentioned, this is shifting the ‘value’
from the build phase to the design
phase.
This isn’t to say that system integration
will become ‘easy’. However, the
trend towards greater standardization
means that there’s less customized code
required to integrate various systems,
and the ‘plug-and-play’ nature of these
modular and configurable systems
means that there’s less of a requirement
for extensive electrical and mechanical
engineering competencies.
As we start to see the integration of
more third-party systems, the need for
system orchestration and execution
becomes increasingly critical. Much
value will be created in connecting and
orchestrating these disparate systems.
The shift towards using third-
party system OEMs also raises the
question of who will own the after-
market service margins. OEM system
integrators have
typically captured
most of the
MRO and other
after-market
service revenue.
However, we’ll
likely see more
System OEMs
capturing the
MRO revenue,
particularly
regarding spare
parts.
A Universal
Phenomenon
The impact
robotics has on
the value chain
isn’t limited to
the warehouse
automation
market. Across
Interact
Analysis’s various
research areas,
we’ve observed
a typical pattern
across sectors
experiencing
innovation
disruption. Value
creation shifts
downstream
to the vendors
developing the innovative systems,
while vertically integrated participants
upstream in the value chain experience
value erosion.
Take the automotive sector, for
example. Historically, OEMs like VW
and Volvo would manufacture most
vehicle components, including the
powertrain. However, with the shift
towards electrification, we’ve seen a
trend whereby the tier-1 suppliers are
leading innovation and capturing more
value by developing new and improved
batteries and electric motors. As such,
the ‘value’ OEMs offer erodes as the
tier-1 suppliers charge more of it.
Going Full-Circle
However, nothing lasts forever. At some
point, the differentiation rate will slow,

and hardware will become commoditized. At this point, we’ll
likely see two things: 1) system OEMs developing integration
capabilities to chase higher margin opportunities and 2)
incumbent system integrators acquiring system OEMs. The
result will be an industry dominated by vertically integrated
system integrators, taking us full circle.

Civil and Urban Engineering at NYU
Abu Dhabi shares her opinion on the
evolving e-mobility industry…
Earlier this month, Stockholm
announced a plan to ban diesel-and-
gas-powered vehicles from entering
large parts of its city centre in one of
the world’s most far-reaching efforts to
combat automobile emissions. It also
potentially marks the beginning of the
end for a form of transport that came
to define urban landscapes. Indeed,
one survey of US cities showed that
downtowns devote an astonishing 50 to
60 percent of their space to vehicles.
While planners haven’t questioned this
situation for many decades, today,
there is a growing environmental and
social movement to re-imagine urban
transport systems with people
Data optimization
Any discussion about the future of
transport in most cities still begins
with optimising car transportation,
and traffic data analytics is critical
to successful outcomes. Sensors and
cameras capture vast amounts of
data about traffic flow, pedestrian
movement, and public transport usage.
When properly analyzed, this data
provides city planners with real-time
insights into the needs and patterns of
its residents.
These tactics can yield impressive
results. For instance, San Francisco’s
SFpark project utilizes sensors to gauge
parking availability and adjust prices
in real time, ensuring optimal parking
occupancy and reducing driver search
time. Sensors have also been deployed
in the UAE, especially at traffic lights,
where they activate the lights in
response to traffic, helping optimize
traffic flow and collecting data. Zurich
also uses traffic lights to slow the
movement of cars to the centre once
it starts getting congested and then
speed up their exit in the afternoons. In
Singapore, vehicles are charged based
on road congestion levels, effectively
reducing peak-hour traffic. Singapore
also utilizes data analytics to anticipate
and manage public transport demand.
Moving forward, there is a lot more we
data analysts can do with the correct
information.
Future solutions
Along with pricing, taxation, and
initiatives such as car park charges
based on peak demand, many other
tools can improve efficiencies. For
example, 60 per cent of Copenhagen’s
residents now commute by bicycle,
thanks to continuous infrastructure
development.
Many cities, particularly in Europe and
the US, have pedestrianized vital areas,
which has helped revitalize areas lost
to traffic. Two famous examples are
New York’s Time Square and London’s
Trafalgar Square. This approach can
also be implemented on a more flexible
basis. Bogotá, the Colombian capital,
introduced ‘Ciclovía’, an initiative that
closes around 120 km of streets to cars
every Sunday, allowing pedestrians and
cyclists to take over. Other methods to
restrict traffic flows include London’s
Ultra Low Emissions Zone, which has
also led to a five times faster pollution
reduction in London than the rest of
the UK.
In the coming years, combining
new technologies and sustainability
goals will redefine urban transport.
Autonomous Vehicles could reduce the
need for personal vehicle ownership
and parking spaces and lower traffic
congestion. The shift to electric
vehicles, including buses and taxis, also
seems inevitable, with cities worldwide
investing in EV charging infrastructure
to cater to future demand. Helping
coordinate and unify more complex and
fluid transport systems, Mobility-as-a-
Service (MaaS), envisioned as a singular
digital platform, would combine
various modes of transport – buses,
trams, bikes, and ride-shares – offering
an optimized commuting solution. This
could significantly help with first- and
last-mile solutions.
Why urban planners need to think about communities, not cars?

PEOPLE-CENTRIC URBAN TRANSPORTATION
Looking further ahead, technologies
like Hyperloop and magnetic levitation
(Maglev) trains promise speeds
surpassing traditional rail or even
flights for inter-city transport. While it
might sound like science fiction, drones
for delivery and passenger urban air
mobility could become a part of the
urban transit ecosystem.
Societal values vs efficiencies
IIt’s important to note that no one
strategy fits every city. Older cities that
were not built for cars can sometimes
adopt strategies to discourage vehicles
more efficiently than cities built around
modern roads. Cycling in Amsterdam
makes more sense than it does in Abu
Dhabi, for example, due to the layout
of the city centre, cultural expectations,
and climate.
Some Asian cities, including Tokyo,
Singapore, and Hong Kong, successfully
rely on public transportation but can
do so quickly because they have very
high population densities. There is
also public tolerance, or otherwise,
to specific measures. Singapore has
developed much pricing to discourage
car ownership, which might not be so
popular in London, where sections of
the public and media have perceived
initiatives such as 20mph zones as
‘anti-freedom’. Even pedestrian zones,
which have been proven to benefit
neighbourhoods, can face strong
resistance from car-reliant residents.
The lesson is that any
transport policy must
consider residents’ culture
and specific needs for it to
work.
There is also a broader
context of making cities
liveable and functional.
Studies have shown
that providing public
transport services in bad
neighbourhoods leads
to lower crime rates and
economic growth due to
residents’ access to better
education and job opportunities.
Conversely, when the Interstate
Highway System was built across
the US in the 1950s, the freeways
were typically routed through poorer
neighbourhoods, where real estate was
cheaper, killing many once lively areas.
So we must study these examples and
consider what portion of society our
policies benefit. When we only invest in
cars, are we doing this to the detriment
of people who can only afford public
transport services? And when we push
people to more expensive electric cars,
where does that leave people who
cannot afford to upgrade?
Some of these questions have
challenging answers. Technology and
data can empower decision-making,
allowing cities to tailor efficient,
sustainable, and, most importantly,
people-centric solutions. By learning
from global examples and embracing
futuristic technologies, urban centres
can pave the way for a revolution in
transportation, ensuring a harmonious
– and fairer – coexistence of people,
technology, and the environment.

stakeholders.
In summary, as a DPWorld company,
we aim to reduce our emissions by 28%
by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality
by 2040 and net zero by 2050. We
are implementing a phased approach
with short-term, mid-term and long-
term plans addressing challenges in
each pillar of our operations: Caspian
and Cargo Transport, Offshore and
Port Services. As we operate globally
across all seven continents, we also
work closely with local partners and
governments to ensure we tailor to local
environments.
Initiatives and sustainable practices
are already in place, exemplified by
our partnership with Tree Nation

Let’s dive into AISA (AI Safety Assistant Tool). What
inspired you to develop this tool, and what problem does
it aim to solve?
AISA was inspired by the need for a comprehensive safety
management tool that goes beyond traditional approaches. It
is an AI safety assistant that addresses the challenge of effective
communication and decision-making in the maritime sector
by leveraging AI to provide instant support in any language.
AISA aims to enhance safety, streamline operations, and bridge
communication gaps within diverse naval crews.
Can you walk us through how AISA works and how it
integrates artificial intelligence to enhance safety in
maritime logistics?
AISA integrates seamlessly into existing systems, utilising
Chat GPT-4 to comprehend and respond to crew queries. It
breaks down language barriers, providing quick and accurate
information 24/7. By consolidating data and offering real-time
insights, AISA significantly enhances safety protocols, decision-
making processes, and overall operational efficiency.
What has been the response and feedback from
employees who have utilised AISA in their day-to-day
experience?
The response to AISA has been overwhelmingly positive.
Crew members appreciate the instant support and valuable
information it provides, leading to enhanced safety awareness
and improved operational efficiency. Currently, AISA is
answering over 200 questions weekly from crew members. It
has become integral to our daily operations, empowering our
teams to make informed decisions and contributing to a safer
working environment.
Looking ahead, what emerging trends do you see shaping
the future of maritime, particularly in terms of safety,
sustainability, and operational practices?
Technology Integration: AI, as I mentioned just now, is
a crucial trend here, and it’s taking the world by storm, as
we have seen in the past months. Besides that, Internet of
Things (IoT) and automation are also technologies that are
revolutionising our industry. AI-driven predictive analytics and
IoT-enabled sensors will enhance safety measures by predicting
and preventing potential risks, while automation will optimise
operational efficiency and reduce human errors.
Environmental responsibility: We increasingly focus on
ecological sustainability and decarbonise our operations. At
P&O, we are implementing a flexible alternative fuel strategy
as part of our commitment to decarbonisation. We are also
looking at innovations in ship design, propulsion systems, and
structural weight optimisation.
How is the changing regulatory landscape shaping
decision-making, particularly in ensuring compliance
with safety and environmental standards?
Compliance is integral to our commitment to responsible and
ethical maritime practices. The evolving regulatory landscape is
a catalyst for positive change. It encourages industry players to
adopt flexible and sustainable practices, invest in technology,
and prioritise safety.
That means we must understand and adapt to diverse regional
regulations while leveraging internal expertise to achieve
regulatory compliance. We actively engage with regulators,
explore incentives, and evaluate whether our business models
fit the changing regulations.

ince assuming the position of President of the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani)
in July 2021, Omar Hariri has transformed Saudi Arabia’s ports and maritime
sector through his visionary leadership and strategic acumen. With over two
decades of experience in aviation, cargo, logistics, and transportation, he
spearheads ambitious growth plans for Saudi ports in line with the National
Transport and Logistics Strategy.
Mr. Hariri has significantly improved Saudi Arabia’s logistics capabilities and
international trade relations in his current role. He initiated the Mawani project to
enhance port infrastructure. These efforts have expanded the number of logistics parks
in Saudi ports to 13, with significant investments from local and global industry leaders
surpassing 7 billion SAR. This strategic move is projected to elevate the Kingdom’s rank
from 38th to among the top 10 in the global logistics services performance index.
Under Mr Hariri’s guidance, Saudi Arabia has broadened its network to 97 routes,
linking the Kingdom with 348 worldwide destinations, and boosted its transhipment
market share to 32% in 2022, a significant increase from 12% just three years prior. This
growth can be attributed to enhancements in organizational and legislative procedures.
Notable recognitions further validate
the substantial progress made during
his tenure.
These include an impressive
jump of eight places to the 16th
spot in annual throughput in the
Lloyd’s List 2023 rankings and
an increase to 77.66 points in the
UNCTAD’s 2023 Liner Shipping
Connectivity Index (LSCI). Saudi
Arabia ranked fifth as the world’s
fastest in container ship handling
per hour, according to the UNCTAD
annual index issued by the United
Nations Conference on Trade and
Development.
Another significant contribution
from Mr Hariri is the ‘Smart Ports’
initiative launched in 2022. This
initiative integrates advanced
technologies, utilizing artificial
intelligence and the Internet of
Things, to develop infrastructure
further, boost productivity, reduce
carbon emissions, and enhance
global competitiveness.
Before his tenure at Mawani, Mr
Hariri held the CEO position
for Saudia Cargo and Saudi
Logistics Services (SAL). Under
his astute leadership, these
companies underwent an extensive
modernization program, enhancing
their infrastructure and systems
to align with global standards. He
broadened its range of activities
via horizontal and vertical business
integration, extending beyond
the confines of airport premises.
Furthermore, he spearheaded the
preparation for SAL’s listing on the
Saudi stock exchange - a significant
milestone in the company’s growth
trajectory.

ost of the time,
‘leadership position’
and ‘leading’ are
perceived the same
and deemed more
synonymical than the innate
contextual difference. In substance,
proving ROIs and constantly
winning in leadership differs from
leading hundreds or thousands
of minds toward the same vision.
One must connect deeply, inspire,
and spark a sense of ownership
of shared goals to lead. “Leading
others well means leading yourself
the best way possible – who
will believe in you if you don’t,
yourself,” says Gaurav Biswas,
Founder and CEO of TruKKer.
TruKKer is MENA’s pre-eminent
digital land freight ecosystem, with
around 60,000+ trucks hauling
across 40+ countries in the MENA,
EU, and CIS regions and catering
to multifarious logistics needs of
1,000+ enterprise shippers. The
company’s proprietary technology
stack sports immense usage of
deep tech – and the same allows
for harnessing the power of real-
time data for maximum network
leverage.
TruKKer’s expansive freight
network has been instrumental
in developing the China-Asia-
EU trans-national tradeway that
efficiently links key industrial hubs
and economic zones in the EU and
countries in China with Central
Asian markets.
Before TruKKer, Gaurav held
distinctive leadership roles at
international consulting firms
such as AECOM and Arup for
over 12 years. Under Gaurav’s
stewardship, TruKKer received the
region’s most considerable Series
A funding from any startup and
the Middle East’s first venture debt
back then. The company has also
received substantial backing from
marquee investors like Investcorp,
Mubadala, ADQ, STV, and Riyad
Taqnia Fund of Saudi Arabia.
TruKKer has raised over US$200
million in equity and debt funding.
“Two big challenges characterize
how you lead today,” Gaurav
opines. “Ripening yourself with
complex demands while staying
pragmatic. And coping with the
unusual disruption pace that
causes these needs and urges
innovation.”
The company uses a 4-pillar
strategy to build and refine
its offerings – communication
and collaboration, efficiency,
experience, and brand. “Our
platform collates data from each
interaction at every touchpoint,
and the self-learning algorithms
identify usage patterns and
behaviours, which helps us become
more relevant to our customers,”
he informs.
Attributing innovation as the
company’s core success factor,
Gaurav also speaks highly of
Saudi’s national policies and the
upward trend they have created.
“There is backing at the highest
level. We also think the current
evolution will increase in the
coming years as investors and
governments play a more active
role in creating value globally.
Businesses like TruKKer are on
a journey from MENA to the
world!”
TruKKer is always looking for
opportunities for expansion into
fresh markets that harbour strong
synergies with the operating
business while gearing up for
its IPO, and Gaurav is eagerly
awaiting the journey ahead.
“We’re gearing up for an exciting
year in 2024,” he expressed.
“We anticipate sustained growth
in the Gulf markets, fuelled by
robust infrastructure development
in Saudi nations as they diversify
into non-oil sectors. As for our
European business, we’re getting
ready to navigate the ongoing
macro challenges in that sphere,
aiming to fortify our presence and
resilience in our markets. Our
ultimate vision is to become an
iconic Arabian brand with a global
footprint, extending our services
and network beyond the Arabian
region. I envisage more regional
businesses making significant
marks on the world stage.”

aud Abu Alshawareb is executive vice president
of industry at TECOM Group PJSC and has
been instrumental in driving the growth and
success of Dubai Industrial City, the region’s
leading manufacturing and logistics hub, which
confirmed almost AED 1 billion in investments earlier this
year.
Abu Alshawareb’s innovative approach to industrial
leasing and strategic planning has fostered an environment
conducive to collaborative and innovative manufacturing at
Dubai Industrial City, a part of TECOM Group that, since
its establishment in 2004, has united local, regional, and
global manufacturing leaders in Dubai.
Home to more than 800 customers and 300 operational
factories, Dubai Industrial City offers a world-class
masterplan divided across six strategic sector-specific zones
– base metals, machinery, minerals, F&B, transport, and
chemicals – that facilitates intra-sector collaboration and
creates an integrated manufacturing network, eliminating
supply chain uncertainties and wastage. Abu Alshawareb’s
wealth of experience and insights have strengthened Dubai
Industrial City’s role as an enabler of deeper public-private
collaboration to deliver industry-wide advancements. Over
the past year, he has led several collaborations to enhance
the district’s contributions to national visions for growth
– Operation 300bn, Comprehensive Economic Partnership
Agreements (CEPA), or Dubai Economic Agenda ‘D33’.
In May 2023, Dubai Industrial City partnered with the
Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT)
to deploy the Industrial Technology Transformation Index
in the manufacturing sector, marking its commitment to
decarbonisation, digitisation, digital transformation, and
Industry 4.0. Furthermore, during the launch of the Make
Brilliance global campaign in May 2023, Dubai Industrial
City and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment
(MOCCAE) signed an agreement to promote decarbonisation
in the industrial sector under the UAE Net Zero by 2050
strategy and support the National Food Security Strategy
2051.
Several empowered customers operate advanced and
automated facilities at Dubai Industrial City that elevate
the UAE’s vision for future sustainability. Unilever’s fully
automated Dubai Personal Care facility in the district is part
of the World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse Network,
while Silver Line Gate Group is developing an AED 200
million manufacturing facility at Dubai Industrial City that is
expected to enhance food security in the UAE and the region.
These strategic government partnerships by Dubai Industrial
City, one of TECOM Group’s ten business districts in Dubai,
also facilitate access to investments for its customers. During
the launch of the Make Brilliance global awareness campaign,
Dubai Industrial City entered a strategic partnership with
the Emirates Development Bank (EDB), which extended its
commitment to provide the district’s customers with AED 1
billion in the next 3-5 years. The bank – which had approved
more than AED 513 million towards financing projects and
businesses based at Dubai Industrial City in 2022 – recently
confirmed support for Indian company Himalaya’s new herbal
pharmaceutical factory in the district, on which construction
works commenced in October 2023.
Abu Alshawareb is a driving force for Dubai Industrial City,
which is today home to a multitude of local and international
manufacturing giants like A.P. Moeller-Maersk, Himalaya,
Nutridor, Unilever, Al Khayyat Investments, and Standard
Carpets. His contributions continue to strengthen Dubai
Industrial City’s role as a cornerstone of Operation 300bn,

Emirates Group before assuming leadership of Emirates
SkyCargo. During this time, he gained invaluable experience
in management and leadership across various business areas
and key international markets. With 144 destinations spread
across six continents, Emirates SkyCargo is a thriving global
trade facilitator thanks to the application of this expertise.
Emirates SkyCargo is expanding under Nabil’s direction, and
in FY22–23, the company made a substantial contribution to
the record-breaking annual results for the Emirates Group.
Following this trend, Emirates SkyCargo lifted 1,035,000

previous year. Emirates SkyCargo continues to outperform the
market despite a general softening in the global cargo market.
This is due to the division’s competitive connectivity and
ability to meet customer demand with specialised products.
Emirates SkyCargo has developed a multi-vertical product

THE GOLF AFFAIR
The key initiative of DP World’s mission to make golf
accessible to a broader audience is what they call their ‘Second
Life Container’, which launched in 2022. This specially
created 20-foot shipping container has been on a journey
around the world with the DP World Tour, covering thousands
of kilometres across land and sea, to collect golf balls from
some of the most significant events in the sport. DP World is
then giving these balls a second life. At the DP World Tour
Championship this year, a milestone was reached with the
250,000th golf ball donated. Each of the balls will be donated
to grassroots golf groups worldwide - to inspire more people
to get out and play regardless of their background, location or
skill level.
DP World’s operations account for 10% of global trade. So,
the Second Life Container journey is naturally powered by DP
World’s end-to-end supply chain, multi-modal capabilities, and
expansive global network.
In the 2023 season alone, the container has been transported
with DP World’s trademark reliability and efficiency by land
and sea from the Korea Championship via the Port of Busan -
home to the world’s first BOXBAY - DP World’s revolutionary
high-bay storage system: to the BMW International Open in
Munich via Rotterdam World Gateway, a highly autonomous
port, and the Ryder Cup in Rome via the Port of Naples. Its
final stop of the year was the DP World Tour Championship
via the Jebel Ali Port in Dubai.
The Second Life Container initiative has already made an
impact on young golfers. Kanana Muthomi, aged 11, is part of
the Junior Golf Foundation in Kenya who received a donation.
He said: “These golf balls are transforming my game, and they
are allowing more of my community to come and play!”

at DP World, said, “We

delivering our mission for
golf - which is all about
using our leading logistics
capabilities and global
network to help make the
game of golf possible for
more people. Powered
by our multi-modal
capabilities and ports and

Second-Life Container
has travelled across the
world with the DP World
Tour over the past two
seasons- collecting over
250,000 balls, which are
now being donated to
grassroots golf groups
to inspire more young
people to play the game.”
DP World has a growing
network of sports
partnerships across golf,
cricket, and McLaren
Racing in Formula 1 -
with the overarching aim
to make sport possible.
Additionally, DP World
has been working to
inspire racing lovers
this past week through
its partnership with the
McLaren Formula One

part of their end-to-end
innovative solutions,
they delivered McLaren
via Dubai using BoxBay
technology, an intelligent and efficient High Bay Storage system in Jebel Ali.
With its partnership with the International Cricket Council (ICC), DP World is focused on making cricket more accessible.
As part of this, ahead of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, DP World committed to donating 50 repurposed shipping
containers kitted out with cricket equipment to grassroots clubs worldwide. Titled ‘Beyond Boundaries’ - the initiative was

or more than a century, Mercedes-Benz Trucks, a
division of Daimler Trucks, has been a symbol of
superior quality. Here is everything you want to
know about Mercedes Benz Trucks.
How do Mercedes-Benz Trucks stay at the
forefront of innovation and technology in the
commercial vehicle industry?
Daimler Truck, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz Trucks,
brings all major technology and powertrain activities together
in the company’s own Truck Technology Group. It is the
global competence centre for research, development, and
production for all drive technologies (combustion engines,
battery-electric and hydrogen-based fuel-cell drives); it is also
responsible for vehicle software and electrics/electronics as
well as global purchasing.
Safety is a part of our DNA and one of our central obligations
– not only to our customers but to all other road users. In
line with this, we have already significantly focused on safety
during the vehicle development. With our very own company-
internal accident research department, over the past decades,
we have been laying the foundations for innovative safety
technologies and higher-performing systems. And we will
continue to follow this path. Today, our innovative driver
assistance systems already offer drivers and vehicle occupants
a high degree of safety and comfort. They can help avoid
critical driving situations and handle them safely to protect
vehicle occupants and other road users. In particular, warnings
and active braking intervention can help reduce an accident’s
consequences or avoid a collision entirely.
We at Daimler Truck are committed to the Paris Climate
Protection Agreement. Having CO2-neutral transport on the
road by 2050 is our ultimate goal. We are pursuing a dual-
track battery electric and fuel cell strategy to get there. We
showcase our vision and leadership in fuel-cell trucks with the
Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck, which had its world premiere
as a concept vehicle in 2020.
In the MENA region, we also encourage and foster an
innovative mindset with our local ‘&beyond’ initiative.
&beyond is a program which brings our network of dealers
together, and we exchange our best practices and new ideas
and create blueprints to implement innovative solutions in
their daily business operations. One of the initiatives already
implemented is using AR technology to provide remote
support, which results in quicker, more efficient and precise
servicing.
Can you discuss recent advancements or developments

Morocco to empower our customers to make data-driven
decisions to maximize their fleet efficiency.
We want to develop innovations that make things better

Mercedes-Benz Trucks provides customer-oriented transport

Here in the MENA region, with our General Distributors, we
strive to ensure a successful transition towards emission-free
mobility for our customers. In that sense, we provide top-
class sales consultation and after-sales support with service
contracts for electric truck customers. Our customer – DHL’s

Journey
Ali cultivated an entrepreneurial mindset from a young age,
drawing inspiration from his father’s business acumen. He
studied in Canada, where he was allowed to immerse himself
in the dynamic world of e-commerce and logistics in North
Africa, where the market was very saturated and mature.
During this time, he discovered a profound excitement
and passion for this industry, shaping the trajectory of his
professional journey.
Vision And Mission
When Ali founded Shiplifier, his vision was to fill the
significant gap in the logistics and e-commerce landscape
in the UAE. Unlike the mature markets in North America
and Europe, the e-commerce industry in the UAE was in its
infancy, and the shipping market lagged in modernization.
Understanding that the digitalization and streamlining of
order processing could redefine the competitive landscape, he
aimed to catch up with and surpass these saturated markets.
Shiplifier’s commitment to providing discounted rates isn’t just
about reducing costs; it’s a strategic move to encourage more
frequent shipping for individuals. Moreover, by alleviating
the logistical burden through their platform, they empower
entrepreneurs to confidently establish their stores, ultimately
contributing to the country’s overall economic growth.
Shiplifier isn’t just a logistics solution; it’s a catalyst for
positive change and progress in the vibrant UAE e-commerce
ecosystem.
Boom Of E-commerce
The e-commerce industry has seen rapid growth since
its inception. As this constantly evolves and continues to
increase, so does consumer preference and demand. Consumer
behaviours have naturally changed as everything can now
be accessed and purchased digitally from anywhere at any
time, which has also naturally increased the demand for
businesses to operate at quicker levels. Alongside this, the
booming e-commerce industry has created market expansion
as e-commerce is no longer just for retail but extends to
nearly every industry - for example, healthcare access. As the
e-commerce industry continues to evolve, businesses must
adapt and alter how they operate, as traditional supply chains
must now innovate to keep up with the need for speedy and
efficient solutions.
BRIDGING
THE GAP

the business is revolutionising e-commerce
logistics solutions

BRIDGING THE GAP
Bridging The Gap
The pivotal gap in the industry revolved around outdated
shipping systems and the pervasive lack of trust consumers
had in shipping companies. The discomfort stemmed from
a lack of commitment on the courier’s part and the waiting
times for resolution. Shiplifier emerges as the solution, offering
a comprehensive remedy to shield consumers from these
persistent challenges.
Addressing the digitization gap, Shiplifier introduces a singular
web-based platform, consolidating all aspects into one
dashboard. This provides consumers with enhanced visibility
and control over their parcels and streamlines the entire
process. Moreover, businesses stand to benefit significantly
by gaining access to a multitude of shipping companies at
discounted rates. This ensures a seamless and efficient logistics
operation and translates to significant time savings for
businesses navigating the complexities of shipping. Shiplifier
stands as a beacon, transforming the logistics landscape into a
realm of trust and efficiency.
Trends, Opportunities And Challenges
In the ever-evolving e-commerce and logistics industry
landscape, trends continuously shape and transform the
operational dynamics. The surge in e-commerce amplifies
the potential for a global market reach and opens avenues

for diverse business models, allowing
businesses to cater to both B2B and B2C
segments, unlocking a realm of endless
opportunities. In addition, as technology
continues to advance, it will propel
the logistics sector to grow, promising
advancements in speed, efficiency, and
data management, thereby optimising
overall operations.
However, amid the vast potential
lies a set of challenges. Sustaining a
robust infrastructure, especially in
emerging markets, is challenging, whilst
maintaining cyber resilience, particularly
for e-commerce businesses, becomes
paramount. Additionally, navigating
healthy competition among various
courier options is a challenge whilst
ensuring that efficient last-mile delivery
solutions are firmly in place to secure
overall customer satisfaction. In this
dynamic environment, the e-commerce
and logistics industry stands at the
crossroads of innovation and challenge,
forging a path toward a future defined
by adaptability and resilience.
Technology: The Driving Force
Technology serves as the propellant
driving the industry forward through
many advancements. The streamlining
and efficiency it injects into business
operations are pivotal, transforming
how tasks are undertaken and executed.
Real-time visibility within supply chains,
facilitated by sensors on packages
offering precise locations, exemplifies
how technology enhances logistics
accuracy and responsiveness.
Moreover, technology extends its
influence on consumer experiences,
leveraging data and cookies to tailor
platforms to individual preferences.
This personalization enhances user
engagement and amplifies convenience
by consolidating diverse services into
one digital realm.
Technology engineers faster and more
efficient solutions in the realm of last-
mile delivery, heralding a new era of
customer satisfaction. By embracing
technological innovations, the industry
meets the demands of a digital age
and propels itself into a future defined
by seamless, personalised, and swift
logistics solutions.
Future
In his view, the future will transform
businesses, requiring each company
to adjust to the growing influence of
e-commerce and technology to maintain
competitiveness.
